Piqua, Ohio is a small city in the northwestern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 9,835 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ross County and one of three cities in Ross County (the others being Grandview and Cardington). Piqua is located on the southern edge of Lake Erie. The first European settlers to arrive in what is now Piqua were French traders from Quebec who arrived in 1795 during General George Washington's American Revolutionary War campaign against Great Britain. A group of Shawnees led by Tecumseh had also come north from their territory in Illinois Territory to help support Washington's cause, but they abandoned Piqua when British forces destroyed their village near present-day Cleveland on October 12, 1795. In 1802, Colonel Solomon Grundy established a post office at what is now Piqua after purchasing land east ofpresent-day Cincinnati from Apalachicola Native Americans for $2 per acre (see Grundy Purchase). In 1806, John Cranch built a gristmill on the forks of the Mississippian River that became known as Cranch Mill (now part of Medina State College), which began production flour for local markets in 1807. Not long thereafter, other mills began to sprout up throughout central Ohio; some still operate today including Union Mills and Thomson Mills. In 1821, Gouverneur Morris bought 1/3 interest in Pickaway Land Company and donated it to Ross County for use as a township; this created Highland Township withinRoss County and made Piqua its town charter date January 1st 1824 with a population limit set at 50 people only due to racial purity laws at that time – thus becoming one of just six townships statewide without limits on its population until it was abolished by state statute effective November 3rd 1937 with an increase to 75 residents allowed).
