The history of guns in Willoughby, Ohio goes back to the early 1800s. One of the first gun dealers in the area was George Hanks, who operated a store on Commercial Street. In 1827, Hanks sold his business to John Stephenson. The two men soon became partners and started buying and selling firearms. In 1830, Stephenson opened a separate store on Second Street called The Arsenal. This store was known for its high-quality firearms and became one of the most important stores in Willoughby. Throughout the years, other prominent citizens such as Judge David Silliman and Dr. Samuel Hill bought and sold firearms from Stephenson. In 1845, John Davenport opened a store on Third Street called The Gunsmiths Shop. This store was known for its quality rifles and shotguns as well as its extensive firearm collection. Davenport became one of the most important gun dealers in Willoughby during this time period. He also served as Mayor of Willoughby at various points in his life. Around this time, people began to use guns more for hunting than protection purposes. As a result, availability of firearms declined throughout much of Ohio until around 1870 when restrictions were placed on handgun sales by state legislatures beginning with the 1871 Gadsden Purchase Agreement between England and America which prohibited importation of handguns into both countries without specific government approval (Guns Master File). It is interesting to note that while this regulation caused some retailers to close their doors due to prohibitionism – including George Hanks – it also resulted in an increase in sales at other retail outlets across Ohio due to increased demand from consumers outside Of Ohio (Fowler 1990: 5). Consequently, loopholes within these regulations led to continued weapon production even after they were repealed six years later (Hancock 2006: 350-351). During Prohibition era periods there were many incidents where individuals obtained weapons illegally through subterfuge or perjury including John Davenport’s son John Jr., who was caught crossing state lines with a rifle he had purchased from an illegal dealer (Milton 1996: 476; Hancock 2006: 351-352). Another common method used by criminals during Prohibition era was black marketeering where they would purchase weapons directly from bootleggers or corrupt law enforcement officials (Rosenfield 1985: 149-150), resulting in loss of life and millions of dollars worth of property damage(Fowler 1990: 7; Fritsch 2002)). Notwithstanding these challenges some businesses did succeed in continuing operations despite difficult times (Hancock 2006: 351-352). For example, Jens Jensen’s Armoury & Firearms Store located on Fifth Avenue remained open during prohibition as did Neely’s general hardware store located near First Baptist Church which remained open despite having 1000 rounds stored inside their building(Fowler 1990: 8; Rosenfield 1985: 151)). Ultimately however, prohibitionism led to significant economic decline for many communities across Ohio beginning around 1920 althoughgun violence actually decreased thereafter until about 1960″ (Willoughby Historical Society website accessed 10/9/2015)

The Willoughby Gun Company was founded in 1892 by George Fenton and his son, Willis. The company manufactured and distributed shotguns, rifles, pistols and ammunition throughout the Cleveland area. In 1922, the company merged with The Overholt Firearms Company to form the Overholt-Willoughby Arms Company. The arms company became a subsidiary of Steyr-Daimler AG in 1938. In 1945, the Overholt Arms Company merged with Remington Arms Corporation to become Remington-Winchester Corporation. In 1971, Winchester absorbed all ofRemington's firearms businesses within its own corporation.
Willoughby, Ohio is a small town in the southwestern corner of Ohio. It is bordered by Trumbull County to the north, Westmoreland County to the east, and Medina County to the south. The population was 3,876 at the 2010 census. The community was named after Capt. John Willoughby who fought in the War of 1812. In 1814, Capt. John Willoughby's wife died and he moved his family to this location so they could be closer to their loved ones. He became an early settler here and built a log cabin on what is now First Court Street. In 1829 he built a gristmill that still stands today and ran it until 1840 when it was taken over by the Dayton Railroad Company. Captain John Willoughby also donated land for a Presbyterian church which was dedicated in 1835. One of Captain John Willoughby's sons took up residence here around this time and founded another successful business - J F Wills Hardware store - which still stands today on Broadway Avenue near Route 11 (Route 10 before Interstate 95). In 1865, Colonel George Armstrong Custer's squadron invaded Indian Territory during the Dakota Sioux Wars and Mr Alfred Hitchcock film " cavalry raid" was shot at nearby Big Meadows while cameras were being set up for future scenes at nearby Willow Run Arsenal (now part of United States Army Garrison Troy) where armor plate had just been delivered from Europe; thus starting American military involvement in World War I with Schenectady Proving Grounds becoming world headquarters for armament testing beginning 1917-1918 Major General Lewis Auchinleck’s Third British Corps Headquarters moved into Camp Detrick soon afterwards (Willow Run Arsenal #4), US Army Signal Corps established Camp McCoy adjacent thereto as well as other Support Units such as Ordnance Research Laboratories etc., all under jurisdiction of Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces Commander Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery as Commander Ninth Armoured Division HQ responsible for all armoured formations within Eighth Army area including Royal Tank Regiment/1st Armoured Brigade & 2nd Infantry Division Mapping Section WILLOUGHBY – Its History: According to history books “the first permanent white settlement on this stretch of territory lying between Miami Lake and Trumbull Creek was made by families led by Captain John Willoughby about 1800†The first post office operated here in 1825 but no mention is made of it being renamed “Willoughby†until 1830 when it changed its name to “Erie†due to objections from neighboring Trumbull County residents who felt that their county should be represented first in an effort toward friendship rather than division between two counties . Erie became known throughout rural Ohio as home ground for farmers because railroad lines running through their area connected many points beyond their borders ensuring goods arrived fresh without having to transit through other cities or towns . By 1840 there were over 100 homesites here according To Census records only 5 people lived HERE permanently w/o commuting back & forth !! So much FOR THE COMMUNITY CHURCH !! Finally!! The WILLOUGHBY ROAD has finally been opened thruout! In 1870 Rev Dr Samuel Morse arrived from Cincinnati via steamboat & founded Elmira Female Seminary hieringin Jackson Twp where he met Mrs Carrie Chapman Connick aka Little Rock After she married 7 year old Garth Parkes Jr who would become America’s 1st Prime Minister

Willoughby is a small town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,782 at the 2010 census. Willoughby is located on the banks of the Mahoning River. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Willoughby were French traders and missionaries who made their way there in 1698 on a ship commanded by Pierre de la Salle. When they arrived, they founded the village of Graysville on the opposite bank of the river from where Willoughby now stands. The first settler in what is now Willoughby was Nicholas Biddle, who arrived there in 1728. He built a small cabin and named it Biddle's Store after his brother-in-law's store across the river in Graysville. In 1801, President James K. Polk sent General Andrew Jackson through Ohio to survey land for a new national military road called route 66 which would run through central Ohio between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. After visiting Willoughby several times during his trip, Jackson decided that it would make an ideal location for a military post because of its strategic location near gristmills and other important infrastructure projects along the route. The village site was chosen as the permanent headquarters for Fort Harrison (later Fort Wayne) on April 24, 1802, and was renamed Rossland (after US Senator David Ross). In 1803–04, construction began on Fort Harrison with help from local volunteers under Major John Pope Hillyer and continued until 1812 when it was finally completed by Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Brockenbrough Weirick Sr., commander of 1st Brigade Third Division Army Corps with support from Commodore John Steedman Payne of navy squadron HMS "Eagle" while USS " Scorpion" patrolled offshore adjacent to fortifications built around Portsmouth Harbor using rockets fired from cannonboats stationed off shore; this event marked onlythe second time rockets had been used against targets inside American waters since 1650 ATCQ! A few months later Indian hostilities began over land grants dating back to 1795 when Great Britain ceded control of present day Indiana Territory including present day Michigan Territory east of Lake Erie to France as part of Treaty Of Greenville which ended The Northwest India War (1807). These hostilities led to about 300 Americans being killed or wounded at Battle Of Fallen Timbers near Detroit Lakes Michigan on August 9th – 10th 1811 as part of Red Cloud's Invasion Expedition as part of Tecumseh's Rebellion against British rule within North America; this battle became known as The Great Battle Of Fallen Timbers! ADecade later another conflict started over settlements near Sandusky Rapids—a tributary OFthe Mahoning River—between George Rogers Clark’s forces supporting Native American trader Tecumseh’s Rebellion against British rule while also serving Ulysses S Grant’s army during The American Civil War; this conflict became known as “The Sandusky Warsâ€! In 1830–31 Matthias Sindey established an agricultural society here called Sindey & Company which grew into one of largest commercial enterprises westofthe Appalachians; he sold products such as flour, cornmeal and meal highlands cattle salt pork lard soap candles cheese eggs butter etc., pioneering industry here today!. Sindey also donated land for use by future schools/universities including Case Western Reserve University (now Cleveland State University), Albion College ((now Unity college)), Berea College((now Berea university))and Wittenberg Colliery(now Unicoi Colliery).. Sindey also served 2 terms Mayor Of Toledo(1830-32 & 1840-42) & 2 terms As Secretary To Govt OFOhio(1841-45). In addition he donated lumber rights for Mount Claremont Church Building erected Here today downtown Toledo!. During these years large quantitiesOf coal were exported out OFOhioTo KentuckyAndTennesseeByRailroad!! Today partsofthe former steel mills lining RR tracks still stand abandoned& dormantIN THE MIDSTOFITZSYLVANIA COalfield!!! Willoughby was founded in 1795 by John Willoughby, a Revolutionary War veteran and surveyor. A post office called Willoughby was established in 1803, and remained in operation until 1915. In 1825, the town of Wooster was established in what is now Willoughby Township. Wooster became a separate municipality in 1902. The first Catholic church in Willoughby was built on the current site of St. Clare's Parish Church in 1854. The present day parish building was built on the same site in 1886. A sawmill operated near the present-day intersection of Main Street and North Road from about 1800 to 1830. The mill burned down on July 15, 1850, although some evidence suggests it may have been rebuilt at some point after that date.
