The first Europeans to visit Willoughby were the French in 1795 and the British in 1800. The first post office was established in 1818. The name derived from an Indian word meaning "a place where corn is grown." In 1836, a group of Methodist ministers founded what would become known as First Methodist Church in Willoughby. They began preaching there on October 3 that year. In 1840, they built their first church building which still stands today. In 1847, Willoughby became a township under the jurisdiction of Stark County and until 1890 it was one of four townships within Stark County that did not have its own sheriff or constable. Willoughby's largest industry until after World War II was agriculture with some manufacturing also occurring during this time including shoes for Wilson Rubber Company and Allied Bicycles Inc., radios for General Electric Company and other electronics manufacturers (including Eastman Kodak), and automobiles for J C Whitney & Sons Motorcars Ltd.. After World War II came prosperity through technology with more jobs being created in computers and related fields such as software development and data entry; however much of this employment took place outside of Willoughby Township proper but within suburban areas near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport close to Akron Airport as well as across Lake Erie into Canada where many companies had factories before those located here when NAFTA went into effect starting a trade war between the US countrys over dairy products
