The first settlers in Ada were farmers and their families who arrived in1868 from Illinois. In 1870, a post office was built and the name of the town changed to Ada on account of its location on the Arkansas River. In 1875, a mill was built at Ada and it soon became one of the most important businesses in town. In 1879, a school was built and it quickly became one of the most successful schools in Ada. In 1886, a railroad depot was constructed at Ada and it soon became one of the most important transportation hubs in town. From this point on, development within ADA accelerated as people started to arrive for work in the local industry. By 1899, there were more than 50 businesses operating in downtown Ada!
