Ada, Oklahoma is home to the Ada Naval Air Station. The Naval Air Station was established in 1915 and is one of the largest naval air stations in the United States. The Naval Air Station's mission is to provide aviation services for military, commercial and academic purposes. The Naval Air Station also provides training opportunities for enlisted personnel and officers. The Naval air station operated a Douglas DC-3 airliner named "Navy Grumman F6F Hellcat" from 1948-1950. This plane continued service through2002 when it crashed into terrain near Albuquerque, New Mexico killing all five passengers and crew members aboard . In 2003 a retired McDonnell Douglas MD-11 donated by Delta Airlines became operational at Ada NAS after serving asan airborne command post for Special Operations Forces during Operation Neptune Spear against al Qaeda targets in Afghanistan . Ada is a town in Noble County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,929 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ada was named after Ada County, Iowa, where its first settler, George A. Adair, located his farm in 1877. In 1907 the town's name was changed to honor American Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant because of his donation of land for a school in Ada and also because he had been an early backer of the town's namesake county (Grant County having no incorporated settlements until 1887). In 1912 the US Cavalry depot was built just outside the limits of Ada and it served as a soldiers' barracks from 1912 to 1916 when it became Fort Riley Army Post #1 (later known as West Point Military Academy). This post saw heavy use during World War I as a training ground for Red River mounted cavalry and other troops; it also served as a base for artillery practice and air observation over much of north-central Oklahoma during that war. The post reverted to military use following World War I before becoming an agricultural center with 730 acres (275 hectares) devoted to growing crops in 1922; this area would eventually become well-known for its cornfields which still dominate much of rural Noble County today. After years of growth Main Street developed into what is now one of Ada's most popular tourist attractions - containing several small shops with interesting local memorabilia along with restaurants serving up everything from steak to pies - but tourism has not been enough to keep Main Street alive since arterial road improvements arrived in the late 1970s and 1980s bringing more shopping malls within walking distance while leaving Main Street largely empty except for occasional concerts or funerals held on main street near what used to be its high school buildings which are now apartments/apartments being leased out by developers who hope to turn them into luxury rental properties or even casinos!
