As the first coffee-growing town in Chickasha, Oklahoma, the community had a significant impact on the industry. As Chickasha grew and became an important center for trade and industry, so too did its coffee program. The first commercial coffee crop was planted in 1886 by J.H. Hargrave, a pioneer farmer and business man from Illinois. Over time, other businessmen within Chickasha developed successful businesses that operated out of the town’s several stores and cafes. Coffee became a major economic sector in Chickasha and throughout much of northwest Oklahoma during this time period. The first commercial roasting plant was built in 1897 by Harry Wohlgemuth & Sons Limited Partnership under the ownership of J.M. Hargrave, Sr., one of the original settlers in Chickasha. The partnership roasted up to three thousand cups of coffee each day until it closed its doors in 1907 due to financial difficulties. The plant is now known as a museum located adjacent to the old post office building on First Street in Chickasha which has been restored to its former glory as a vibrant part of local history
