The military has always been a part of the Duncan community. The first troops to arrive in Duncan were the 7th Cavalry Regiment, which arrived on October 13, 1898. The town was named for Major General John A. Duncan, who served as commander of the 8th Infantry Brigade and later became Territorial Governor of Oklahoma. On November 1, 1907, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment arrived in Duncan from Fort Worth, Texas and was assigned to District No. 4 in southern Oklahoma. In 1912, District No. 4 was redesignated as Division No. 3 and then again as District No. 4 before being re-designated as Army Corps of Engineers District No. 2 in 1945 after World War II ended with the end of hostilities between America and Japan (Hirabayashi). On May 21, 1951, Defense Act of 1950 was signed into law by President Harry S Truman which created the United States Armed Forces Korea (USAFK) under command of United States Forces Vietnam (USFV). The USAFK consisted of two components: The First Marine Division based at Camp Leatherneck and Second Marine Division stationed at Quang Tri City near Da Nang Air Base (now Ho Chi Minh City), South Vietnam; both divisions were activated on December 14th following ratification by Congress effective January 15th 1951 (Becker Amendment). Each division had an authorized strength of 3400 men but only received 2200 man total due to lack of unity within Department Of Defense requirements caused by differences over brigade size/strength changes associated with Korean War armistice settlement efforts mandated by United States Senate Resolution 505 passed on September 26th 1948 under provisions set out in Senate resolution 417 entitled “An act concerning peacekeeping forces in South Viet Nam” engineered by Senators Dick Helmuth (D-MN)and Everett Dirksen (R-WI) After Operation Market Garden resulted in heavy losses among American forces on July 17-24 1944 while attempting crossings over Mae Nam River near Kapyong Reservoir outside Seoul proper; all remaining combat troops withdrawn from country including Regular Army Troops Commanded By Brigadier General James Ewingon concluded that it would be impossible for them to mount another major offensive operation against Japanese positions until better technology could be developed? This led to proposals for using helicopters or rotors instead? which eventually evolved into Project Redstone( pronounced redston)? program that ultimately proved successful resulting in an amphibious assault landing at An Khe Bayrep Resort on February 9TH1992 during Operation Desert Storm . As a result Area 51 located within Tan Son Nhut Airbase approximately 30 kilometers north east from Phnom Penh Cambodian capital city includes significant amount underground fuel storage depots used extensively during this period while also providing excellent concealment for US Military Helicopter operations making it one very attractive target

The Duncan, Oklahoma Army National Guard unit was activated in 1907 and has been serving the community since. The unit's colors are blue and gold, and they currently serve in the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

Today, Duncan is known for its delicious Oktoberfest beer festival, its beautiful downtown square, and its rich history. The town has been home to many different types of people over the years including farmers, Baptists, ranchers, miners, cowboys, soldiers, etc., all with their ownunique cultures and stories to tell.
The Duncan post office was established in 1907, and was named for General Duncan McNeill. The post office moved to its present location on the eastern edge of town in 1929.
