El Reno is a small town located in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 4,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. El Reno has a history dating back to 1881 when it was named "Ellington." In 1907, the community was renamed after Major General George H. El Reno, who served as commanding general of American forces during World War I and II. The original schoolhouse still stands in the town and is used as an exhibit hall for local businesses and events. The first post office in El Reno opened on October 3, 1899. The first settler in El Reno was William Witherspoon. Witherspoon's cabin was built on what is now Main Street and he named it "Ellington." By 1912, there were 10 residents living in Ellington. A new school building had been erected on land donated by Jno Pugh and others in 1916 and it became known as "White School" because all white students were required to attend that school until 1939 when black students were allowed to attend without being segregated (though they continued to be taught separately). In 1927, a plan for developing the area around Ellington called for creating a township with a population of 575 people which would have included all of Muskogee County excepting El Reno. On November 17th of that year, members of the Muskogee Chamber of Commerce met at White School to discuss how best to develop their section of town while keeping its rural feel; they decided not to form a township but instead create an agricultural society which would consist of four farms surrounding White School along Main Street from east-west (the present day McLain Road). In 1935, 1/2 mile south of White School on McLain Road stood what would become "El Reno Post Office", serving as the only business within city limits until 1971 when Winans Drugstore moved into its current location across McLain from the old post office building (now known as "The Ferguson Building"). That same year saw also Local GOAT gas station open up service with service available 24 hours daily! This early success led to other expansion plans such as another grocery store being built adjacent to GOAT along State Route 66 soon followed by a Service Station & Bakery on what still serves today as Elmira Drive across from KFC restaurant

El Reno is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The name "El Reno" was given to the town by General George Custer during the Battle of El Reno on November 7, 1876. The first post office at El Reno opened in 1887. The town took its name from General George Custer's command unit, the Seventh Cavalry Regiment. In 1915, when Tulsa became an independent city and El Reno lost its status as a rural community, it amalgamated with other towns in Muskogee County in order to become one municipality. The boomtown atmosphere that characterized El Reno for so many years ended around 1990s when oil prices began to decline and jobs disappeared. However, some residents have kept active in downtown businesses through various organizations such as the Downtown Business Improvement District (DBID). In 2007-2008, the city renovated and reopened its Main Street which had been closed for several years due to extensive damage done by a tornado on March 8th of that year. Today, El Reno continues to experience vibrant cultural life thanks to numerous restaurants and nightlife options located throughout downtown including two theaters district - One Hundred Fifty Sixth and Vine Streets which has multiplexes including Regal Cinemas and AMC Entertainment Centers; two well-known ball fields including Municipal Stadium which has been home to many local high school baseball championships; and Nighthawks Ice Arena which offers ice hockey games throughout the year as well as concerts/puppets shows seasonally as well as small-scale events such as poetry slams or car shows etc.; while also boasting several large grocery stores like Kroger followed by smaller convenience stores like Albertsons Pharmacy before reaching into big box stores like Walmart Neighborhood Market before finally ending up at Sam’s Club where you can find everything from ammunition to plumbing supplies among other things

On May 18th 1957, the city limits were expanded to include all of present-day Tulsa County as well as most of Muskogee County including the town of Elk City on Oklahoma's East Side.
