Coffee has been brewed in Elk City since the early 1800s and it is still a mainstay in the town's economy today. Coffee first began to be grown in Elk City during the early 1800s. By 1852, coffee had become a popular commodity and was being sold from wagonloads throughout the region. In 1862, coffee beans were shipped to Chicago for shipment to various markets around the world. Coffee demand continued to grow throughout the 1860s and 1870s as new technologies were developed that allowed for larger yields of beans. In 1881, an independent coffee business was started in Elmira by J C Richardson and W G Slaughter. This company became known as The Elmira Coffee Company and continued production until 1912 when it merged with another company called The Wichita Coffee Company. At this time, Elk City became home to one of Tulsa's only commercial coffee roasters - The Wichita Coffee Company Roasters Inc.. In 1925, The Wichita Coffee Company merged with two other companies - First National Creamery & Café (now part of Peet’s) and Omaha coffee producer Harry Smith Brewing Co - forming what would eventually become known as Peet’s Corporation. This merger made Elk City home to one of Tulsa’s most famous corporate breweries - Peet's Corporation Roasters Ltd.. During World War II, much effort was put into developing war-time caffeine production methods including using freeze-dried beans instead of fresh beans; using pre-packaged concentrate instead of raw ground coffee; and using green tea extract rather than black tea extract for brewing purposes . Ultimately however, these efforts did not prove successful due to World War II rationing restrictions . The cessation of hostilities in World War II led to increased demand for caffeine within Tulsa – which helped spur development of new war-time caffeine production methods such as using freeze-dried beans instead of fresh beans; using pre-packaged concentrate instead of raw ground coffee; and using green tea extract rather than black tea extract for brewing purposes . As result, many old fashioned cafes reopened after the war while others closed altogether because they could no longer compete with local industry that had moved on to newer technology
