Guymon is a small town in the Canadian province of Oklahoma, located in central Warren County. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The name Guymon comes from French "Haute-Guymon", meaning "high mountain". The name was given to the community by General Edwin B. Ewell during World War II as a way to differentiate it from nearby Lawton, which had been renamed Fort Worth after General Wernher von Braun's Army Ballistic Missile Agency facility became operational there in 1948. Guymon was platted on November 15, 1881, by J.P. Griggs and Wm Sibley Jr., two of Warren County's early settlers. The original town plat included a large piece of land for school and church buildings; only one building remained standing when the community consolidated with nearby Lawton on February 1, 1907. The first post office called Guymon was established on July 11, 1883; it closed on December 28, 1886 due to lack of mail traffic. The present post office was opened on March 14, 1907; it has been in operation since that date. During World War II, many Japanese American detainees were held at Camp Chase nearLawton while they awaited trial in U.S.-administered military tribunals south of Oklahoma City (later known as the Manhattan Project). Some camp residents fled into remote areas such as this one when word spread that Japan would be bombing U.] States targets throughout war-time America so inhabitants could avoid possible exposure or death if caught up in an air raid or other emergency situation; this may have been what led some local farmers to name their property "Chase" after their detention center underU.]S.[government control]. In 1881, the townsite was named after Captain Guymon, a Scottish immigrant who had founded an oil refinery in nearby Jenks. By 1907, the population of Guymon had grown to over 1,500 people and it began to become a center for industry and commerce. During World War II, the town was designated as a assembly point for manufactured goods produced by local companies. The production stopped in 1945 but continue during the postwar period as various small businesses operated out of the town. In 1992, Donnell Crouch became the first black person to serve as mayor of Guymon when he was elected over incumbent James Howlett. During his time in office, he made numerous changes to downtown streetscape and infrastructure while also increasing funding for public services such as libraries and schools. In 2006, Crouch was succeeded by his wife Lori Laughlin who later served two terms as mayor before retiring in 2016. As of 2019, Lori Laughlin is still alive and serving her third term as Mayor of Guymon through 2024
Guymon was founded by the Cherokee in 1827. The town at its peak had a population of 5,000 people. It was destroyed by a fire in 1907 and has since been rebuilt.
