In 1907, when Can territory was created within the state of Oklahoma through an act passed by the government during its annual session, Guymon became its second community after Jenks (now Jenks County). The original post office at Guymon opened on July 1, 1907; it served until 1959 when it moved to Tulsa under then-Governor David Boren's administration as part of larger moves to relocate all government offices from downtown Tulsa to more easily accommodate growth within the state over that period.
