Jenks, Oklahoma is a small town in the United States. The population was 2,872 at the 2010 census. Jenks is located on the banks of the Arkansas River and is part of the Jenks–Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Jenks" derives from an early settler, John Jenkins, who named his farmstead after his trading partner, Jedediah Smith. Jenks was platted in 1856 by James W. Gilmore and it became a county seat in 1907. The population grew rapidly during World War II as war production moved to the area and new housing replaced military barracks. Afterward, joblessness caused many residents to move away as educational opportunities improved in other parts of the country. In 2000, however, Jenks’s unemployment rate decreased by almost two-thirds amid increasing economic development around its riverfront retail district and colleges and universities nearby. Jenks was founded in 1907 by John Jenks and his wife, Rena. The city is named for a wagon train that passed through the area in 1875. In 1914, Jenks became the first town in Oklahoma to be established as a Oklahoman village. The post office was established in 1916 and remained in operation until it closed in 1996. In 1924, the Jenks-McLaughlin Dam was built on the Arkansas River near present-day Jenks. The dam power plant operated until 1984 when it was sold to Central Oklahoma Utilities Company. In 1988, the city limits were expanded to encompass parts of Comanche County and Hughes County. Today, Jenks is a small town with a population of around 50 residents. Jenkins football coach Don Nehlen led the team to two state championships during his thirteen seasons coaching at Jenkins High School from 1949-1966. He also coached at Tulsa (1948), Tulsa State (1951), and Oral Roberts (1965). After coaching at Oral Roberts for three seasons, he returned to Jenkins where he served as head coach until 1970 before retiring due to health reasons In 1990, after serving as mayor of Jenks for two years, incumbent Mayor John Hennessey ran for sheriff of Comanche County against Bob Cooks III who had been appointed by then Governor Drew Edmondson . Hennessey won handily with over 60% of the vote . He served out his term which expired on January 1st, 1992 After leaving elected officeHennessey resumed his law practice until his death on October 16th , 2000
