Jenks is located on the Arkansas River and is bordered by Anadarko to the east, Muskogee to the north, and Canadian Creek to the west. It is part of Muskogee County. The first permanent settler in Jenks was George Burtis who arrived on July 1, 1881. The original town site was a location near present-day Jenks High School which opened in 1907. The name "Jenks" was given to the settlement by General James P Stroud from Fort Supply after he visited it during his expedition against Caddo Indians in 1876. In 1907, Jenks had two post offices: one serving Anadarko and another serving Canadian Creek. In 1951, both posts were merged into one office under the name Anadarko Post Office until its closure in 2002 due to budget cuts by then- governor Don Easley.
