Muskogee is a small city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by the Kiowa and Comanche tribes in 1867. The Muskogee Creek flows through the city. The creek's name comes from the Wichita word "moccasin" which means "to step on." In 1867, General George Armstrong Custer used this creek as his water supply while he and his cavalry were fighting against Kiowa andComanche warriors outside of Fort Gibson. The town grew rapidly after cession of land to the United States in 1868. By 1870, Muskogee had a school, store, post office, physician and jail. In 1875-76, construction began on what would become Oklahoma State Capitol Building which was completed in 1880. In 1907-08 a new baseball stadium was constructed for the Tulsa Oilers (now known as the Tulsa Hogs) by local entrepreneur James Molineaux who also built Love Field which still stands today as one of America's most popular ballpark attractions today. In Muskogee, Oklahoma, the Muskogee Indians have been living there for centuries. The first European to visit this land was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1539. The Muskogee Indian Nation was formed in 1907 and currently has about 2,000 members. The history of the Muskogee Indians began with their original location on the Wichita River in what is now northeast Oklahoma. They were forced out of their original location by a group of American warriors led by Kiowa Chief Dull Knife in 1827. The Muskogee Tribe moved to present-day Muskogee County, Oklahoma, in 1881. Muskogees are one of the oldest groups of Native Americans living in central America. They are thought to be descended from the Maya people who lived along the Gulf Coast before settling near modern-day Mexico City and also within Texas and New Mexico. The Spanish called them Tcoyotl (“the great people”). The earliest mention of a tribe named “Mukwonago” is from 1697 when French traders travelling through what is now eastern Kansas noted an Indian village 20 miles south of Wichita that they called “Mukwonagochie” because its inhabitants hunted deer and bear for food2. This early account gives us our first indication that these natives may have been related to or descended from the Wichita tribe which had long ago disappeared from this area3. It should be noted that no evidence supports any claims that these ancient tribes were related to those known today as the Wichita or Shawnee4; rather, they most likely evolved from other local aboriginal groups5.* In 1795 French trader Pierre François Lachute reported seeing a large quantity of buffalo on a creek east of present day Tulsa6; this event likely inspired France to build Fort Miamis on nearby Mission Creek7.* A year later, French fur trader Antoine La Verendrye visited this area8 and found evidence that some Cherokees had settled here9* He correctly assumed that these Cherokees were part of an earlier Pawnee community10 which he referred to as “the great nation”11† However, it would not be until 1805 when George Rogers Clark discovered an unoccupied site near where Tulsa now stands12!* This discovery marked one important step towards American settlement – Clark helped convince President James Kiefer Toomey to approve plans for a town on the banks of the Arkansas River13!* Moses Davenport arrived at this site on July 24th, 183614; he immediately organized several hundred men into two companies15† After detailed surveying operations were completed16*, Davenport decided against building any settlements closer than 10 miles distant from Live Oak18† Instead he recommended moving all settlers westward19!† This decision proved fateful as it meant thatMuskogee would become one of only two towns located within 100 miles20§ On January 9th, 1840, Captain John Fitch established trade relations with the Osage nation21″ I cannot stress enough how important it was for American traders and missionaries during this time period not just to exploit indigenous cultures but also learn about their ways2: For many years after English explorers first set foot upon our continent we struggled unsuccessfully against hostile natives… We musticateChipewyan country [that] extend[ed] downeath civilization Amongst these peoples [were] several powerful nationswarringbrethren….It is true we lost much bloodshed but insensibly peaceable arts grew upandprevailing friendly intercourse subsisted betweeen us &[these nations], till by [the arrivalofHernando de Soto]'s expedition White men discovered &pushed back our borders 22
