The Muskogee National Guard was organized in 1907 as a part of the Oklahoma Territorial Militia. The unit saw first combat during World War I and was disbanded in 1919. In 1940, the Muskogee National Guard was reorganized as a separate battalion and served in World War II. The unit returned to active duty after the war and participated in the Korean War. The National Guard has since been disbanded but its members continue to serve in other capacities within the Oklahoma militia system.
Muskogee is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Muskogee County by population. The peak of the local cotton crop around 1885 caused development to increase rapidly within Muskogee and its environs. In 1907, post office founder J.W. Brown opened a general store on what would later become Fourth Street and organized other businesses in that area such as a grocery store and livery stable. Businesses grew rapidly because of rich farmland located along the legendary Choctawhatchee River which served as an early shipping route for goods from rural Oklahoma to eastern markets. The busy thoroughfare Main Street was also one of the first streets in town with sidewalks and streetlights installed in 1909. In 1912, Muskogee's first school was built on Third Avenue near Broadway square; it became known as State High School after statehood in 1907. A new courthouse was built on Second Street between Elm and Grand Streets in 1913; this building served as the county seat until 1931 when it moved to Guthrieville (now Fairbanks). The influx of people during World War I led to an increased demand for housing, so developers began constructing homes throughout downtown Muskogee starting in 1923-24 followed by additional buildings throughout downtown during World War II due to shortages of land available for farming following the war’s devastation across most Midwest regions. After federal prohibition ended with repeal of Prohibition Act by President Harry S Truman on Jan 1st, 1933 manyOklahoma citizens turned their back on alcohol which had been key to economic prosperity among whites prior to prohibition enforcement issues driving much joblessness among Oklahomans during Prohibition era years 1919-1933 Today there are several blocks surrounding downtown where once lived thousands more people than exists today resulting from various redevelopment efforts initiated over time especially since 2000s with major center project underway called One OK City complex which will include nearly 600 apartment units and retail components including a large entertainment district anchored by two high-end movie theaters
The National Guard Gift History goes back to the Revolutionary War. In 1776, Massachusetts Governor John Adams called for a national guard of 1,500 men to protect the colonies against British attack. The first national guard was created on July 3, 1777 in Philadelphia under General George Washington. By 1800, there were more than 10,000 national guardsmen in existence. During the Civil War, many soldiers from states that did not secede joined the Union army as part of the “Northern” army. Partisan warfare and shortages of supplies led to high casualties among both sides. As a result, many military commanders turned to gifts as an makeshift solution for their troops. On April 12th 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky when Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived with his 8th Virginia Infantry at Fort Donelson he ordered his unit's chaplain to give him a religious exemption from military service because of his beliefs about slavery and racial equality. This event is known as "The Ewellization of the National Guard." In 1964 Congress passed legislation authorizing expenditures for Gifts to Military Forces (Gift Aid). That same year President Lyndon Johnson signed Executive Order 9066 which directed all Federal agencies to provide gift aid programs for members of the National Guard and Reserve forces during peacetime and wartime operations. At that time there were over 500 organizations providing gift assistance through Federal agencies alone! Since then, federal government gift programs have been refined and expanded several times including: 1993 - The Defense Family Program (DFP) which authorized spending on unique family-owned or -operated businesses that support military families; 2002 - The American Soldier Foundation (ASF) which provided matching funds up to $25 per credit hour spent by AmeriCorps members in Veterans Affairs clinics; 2006 - The Stephen Sizer Award program which provides special recognition and benefits to individuals who donate items or services through Federal agencies' online donation systems; 2007 - Departmental Memorandum Orders concerning giving preference within certain Federal Agencies toward personal donations by civilians rather than corporate gifts; 2009 - Grants For Soldiers initiative which targeted veteran-owned businesses who wished to apply for grants utilizing their civilian expertise; 2010 - DOD Continuity Grant program which authorizes funding for specific activities designed To improve relationships between Federal civilian employees and Departmental military officers/dependents
The National Guard was first activated in 1907. In 1916, the National Guard was placed under the jurisdiction of the Department of War. The National Guard was renamed the Army National Guard on 8 October 1940. On 15 November 1946, it became a part of the Department of Defense and was divided into three branches: Army (the Regular army), Air Force (the Reserve air force), and Navy (the Naval guard). The Coast Guard also joined as a part of the Department of Defense on 14 September 1947.
In Muskogee, Oklahoma, the town of Muskogee was founded in 1868 by J.W. Musco and his brother John. The first white settler in what is now Muskogee, George A. Smith, arrived in 1869. By 1870, the population of Muskogee had increased to 25 people and the town became a strategic location for Indian traders because of its proximity to Choctaw Nation land and water resources. In 1876, Fenton County was created from part of Tulsa County and Muskogee became one of its first townships. In 1907, the city of Tulsa was established withinMuskogee Township and it gradually replaced as the primary center for economic development in the region. In 1925, the name change to Muskogee City after becoming an official municipality under state government jurisdiction with a population over 50,000 residents. Throughout its history as an agricultural center and later as a commercial hub for central Oklahoma, Muskogee has been home to many notable citizens including Justice William McKinley (1865-1941), inventor Alfred Plessy (1863-1937), oilman David Lubbock (1885-1965), banker Luther Strange (1945-2010) and author Willa Cather (1887-1962). Today,Muskogee is still known for its wide variety of cultural attractions such as art galleries and museums; traditional crafts; haymaking festivals; rodeo events; annual Oktoberfest celebration; live music concerts throughout October; world class golf tournaments at nearby Clay Center Golf Club; tennis tournaments both amateur and professional; horseback riding tours through adjacent rural areas around town; hunting expeditions on behalf of national parks like Yellowstone National Park or Grand Teton National Park during off season months when game populations are low; buffalo hunts near Jenks AFB Air Force Base near Durant where wild bison were once hunted successfully until 1974 when all Federal hunting rights were transferred back to State control
In 1881, Muskogee was founded as a trading post by the Cheyenne and Arapaho. The post served as an important center for trade with other Native American nations. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, and in 1907 it became a city. In 1913, Muskogee was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who was killed in battle near the town.
