Mustang is a small town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Mustang was founded in 1907 by Hemanus Ford and his family. The first post office in Mustang was established in 1911. The name of the town came from Mustangs that were used by the Ford brothers to race horses. In 1922, a school named Mustang High School opened and continued operations until it merged with nearby Rogers High School in 1969. The Ford family sold their holdings of Mustang to the government for $3 million in 1928; this provided financial stability for the community as well as resources for future development including a new high school and hospital that were built subsequent years. In 1954, when Orville Nance became governor of Oklahoma, he directed the state legislature to create a special committee to study options for moving an Air Force Base from Forbes AFB south of Tulsa into Haskell County so that it could become an air base operated by the state government rather than by Tulsa-based Lockheed Aircraft Corporation which had been serving as its primary tenant since World War II. After three years of study, deliberations and recommendations prepared by members of both houses of the legislature, on January 17, 1956 center field at Forbes AFB airspace over Tulsa's Municipal Airport reverted back to open space due to restrictions placed upon Lockheed's use thereof during Cold War hostilities between America and Russia (the "Tulsa Agreement"). This action followed recent renovations within Forbes AFB itself which had included installation of an all-weather Runway 16/34 surface facility providing Kitty Hawk-class fighter aircraft with level flying conditions availability throughout every day or night mission envelope). It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area and is the most populous municipality within that area. The town was founded in 1907 by men from the nearby city of Jenks. Mustang's name comes from Mustangs Rest Ranch, a cattle ranch that once lay within its boundaries. A post office called Mustang was established in 1908, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1915. In 1910, a group of men from Jenks began to build a cabin on what would become Mustang Lake. That same year, they changed the name of their settlement to Mustang after veteran Confederate General John Custer died during an engagement near present-day Jenks. Mustang has experienced significant growth over the years; it reached its current size in 2000 when it annexed land around McBride Municipal Airport to form a new municipality with a population of 3,527 residents

In 1951, Mustang became an independent city and consolidated with neighboring Jenks into one municipality under Mayor Harry Laverty's administration; however, Jenks continued to be its own municipality until 1959 when it merged with Mustang to form what is now Tulsa City proper
