The Marines of the 1st Marine Division deployed to Kuwait in 1990 as part ofOperation Desert Shield. They arrived in town on December 12th and spent Christmas with their families. The next day, they were briefed on the situation in Iraq. The Marines then set out for Baghdad. Once they reached Baghdad, they were assigned to the 4th Infantry Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team (3/5). This brigade was responsible for providing security for Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his cabinet. On January 15th, 1991, Saddam Hussein Mussawi invaded Kuwait. The Marines fought off an attack from Iraqi tanks while also repelling a suicide bombing attempt against them that morning. After five days of fighting, Saddam Hussein was captured and brought before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), which found him guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity. He was sentenced to death by hanging but this sentence was commuted to life in prison due to public opposition within his own country at the time. In 1992, 3/5 moved back home to Oklahoma City where it remained until 2003 when it left again for Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom under command of Marine LtCol James Mattis III commanding 1/2 Battalion 5thMarine Regiment (1/2 AR) stationed at Camp Robinson Barracks outside Phoenix AZ during winter 2009-2010

Oklahoma City is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 627,814 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in the state and its second-largest city by population after Tulsa. On July 24, 1847, settlers gathered around a campfire to select a provisional capital for new territory; New Town voted to choose Kansas City as its capital instead due to concerns about transportation distances between Kansas City and Guthrie (then an unincorporated community). In 1861 when Lincoln was elected president, he approved Congress's creation of Indian Territory with headquarters at Topeka (now Topeka & Geary County),Kansas; this created a need for a metropolis on the western edge of Indian Territory where people could trade goods with Native Americans living inside newly formed United States territories. In December 1861 commissioners selected downtown Oklahoma City as the site for permanent territorial government under military command; soon afterward construction began on Territorial Capitol Building on Main Street near Woodward Avenue. The building served as both territorial courthouse and legislative chambers until 1907 when it became home to Oklahoman Red Cross Hospital before being taken over by local government again in 1951–1957 as part of Veterans Affairs Memorial Park District #2; currently known as Downtown OKC Municipal Center district #1 . A committee chaired by then-mayor George Wuhrer recommended that downtown be renamed "Oklahoma City" on January 15, 1923 following approval from President Warren G Harding; although locally popular initial suggestions included "OldTown", "Tulsa", or even just "City Hall" (now Civic Center), eventually 'OKC' won out over any other names submitted due to its perceived prestige among locals/ outsiders alike – notwithstanding some recent efforts by proponents to rebrand downtown using modern terms like Arts District or Energy Corridor while retaining much historical character/origin including most notably Regency Squareadee Park which has been hosting world events like rock concerts since 2007
