The Oklahoma City Naval Shipyard began production of naval vessels in the early 1900s. The first USS Oklahoma was launched here in 1911 and served as a battleship during World War I. The shipyard produced many other warships, including the USS Missouri (BB-59) and the USS Lexington (CV-2) during World War II. During the Cold War, the shipyard produced submarines and aircraft carriers. In recent years, the navy has used the shipyard to build littoral combat ships and destroyers. The navy's deployment history in Oklahoma City is unique. The first USS Oklahoma was built at this site in 1911 and served as a Battleship during World War I before being sunk in 1918 by enemy gunfire while operating off Newfoundland. The second USS Oklahoma was also built at this site but never completed due to financial difficulties caused by World War I. After that, it became common for navies to deploy ships from different sites within their fleets simultaneously so that they could be operated as part of a combined operations force under one command. This practice continued into the Cold War when navies formed task forces which were then divided into fleets which would operate together under one command again. In 1945, when World War II ended, both navies returned home with their respective units intact but without any warships or equipment left behind them. It was not until 1951 that OKC began producing warships again when HMS Daring was launched here as part of Operation Weeting which aimed to stop Korean Communist infiltration into Canada through southern Manitoba before they could reach Winnipeg city limits). The navy continued producing warships until 1966 when HMS Warrior became operational here after being delivered from UK yards via ferryboat service between Thunder Bay and Aruba where she had been repaired following her previous owner's loss of battlecruiser HMS Repulse (SC-5) while flagship of Battle Squadron 5th Fleet off Borneo). From 1967 until 1990 when it ceased completely due to budgetary reasons; OKC hosted three types of naval exercises: Arctic warfare exercise Stonington "97", amphibious warfare exercise Soontirak "98" and summer maneuvers NATOFOREX "99". These exercises usually took place on various parts of campus including Lake Okeechobee where Exercise Flagstaff preparations typically took place prior to Grand Canyonfest weekend events there on July 1st/2nd each year Oklahoma City Naval Shipyard closed its doors permanently on October 15th 1993 after 50 years continuous production of naval vessels for our nation’s armed forces! The USS Constellation , positioned offshore accompanying HMS Monmouth , played an instrumental role in providing cover fire while aircraft destroyed most of the enemy vessels within minutes..
