The city has a population of over 350,000, making it one of the most populous metropolitan areas in North America. It is also home to some of the most important cultural and historic landmarks in Oklahoma. The area that now makes up Oklahoma City was first settled by Native Americans in the 1820s. The land that would become Oklahoma was acquired by Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo after Mexican independence from Spain. In 1907, Oklahomans voted to create their own government and named their new capital, Norman, after Senator John B. Wesleyan who had led them into independence. In 1921, Norman became the temporary capital of Oklahoma when Tulsa was destroyed by a fire that burned for days. In 1925, Tulsa was again renamed Norman because it had been determined that both cities were too similar- one being founded on Native American land while the other was built on Spanish soil. On May 25th, 1930, Oklahoma Statehood took place with Norman becoming its official capital under this new name. The city saw rapid growth during World War II with many businesses and residents moving to wartime production sites such as tank plants and aluminum smelters located within walking distance of downtown OKC. However, postwar prosperity ended abruptly when oil prices collapsed in 1973 due to OPEC embargoary policies enacted by oil-producing countries around then-oil-rich Iran and Iraq. As a result of this downturn in business activity and housing values throughout much of North America, oklahomanians turned out in droves for Republican presidential candidate Richard Nixon’s November 3rd inauguration ceremony which marked an end to more than forty years during which they had not elected a Democrat to high office inside their state’s borders![1] By 2000 however joblessness rates had started returning towards pre-recession levels[2] so once again Downtown OKC experienced significant gentrification with expensive apartments sprouting up all around what once were small shopping districts known as “the Loop” or “the arts district”[3]. Today many people identify Downtown OKC as their local Chinatown or Latin Quarter due to its large concentration (around 60%)of Chinese residents living within walking distance;[4] however many original Japanese families still call home these blocks near FirstEnergy Stadium.[5] Despite this mixed bag exterior reality there are actually several fairly thriving neighborhoods inside DowntownOKC including Arts District 2nd Ward,[6],[7],[8],[9], MidtownWest,[10],[11], Cottonwood Heights,[12] Devon Village,[13],[14], Alamo Heights,[15],[16][17]; Northwestside Independent School District No 9 neighborhood is also doing well [18][19].
