Okmulgee, Oklahoma is a city in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 27,549 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tulsa County. The city was founded by settlers from Iowa in 1887 and named for George C. Okmulgee, a general in the Union army during the American Civil War who died in action that year. Oklahoma City was founded as an agricultural community in 1907 on land acquired by George C. Okmulgee from the Creek Nation after he had led an expedition against them east of Muskogee River. The town grew rapidly when oil discoveries were made at Edmond and Anadarko Fields in 1911 and 1913, respectively; Okmulgee became one of the leading petroleum cities of its time. By 1930, it had become one of the largest cities in America with a population over 100,000 people. However, during World War II Okmulgee was closed to civilians due to its strategic location within range of Japanese forces engaged in bombing and strafing raids on American cities
