Okmulgee is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. In 1907, the town was taken over by Wichita Falls and became its economic center. Oklahoma was admitted to the Union as a state on November 16, 1907. The land that makes up Oklahoma was first settled by Native American peoples and was part of the Kiowa, Comanche, Apache and other tribes. Oklahoma's largest city at that time was Tulsa; however, due to its location near Mexican territory it never received U.S.-level development like larger metropolitan areas such as Albuquerque or Phoenix did after 1880 when American settlers started moving into this region seeking new land grants from Mexico City instead of traditional farming routes along the southern Plains access corridor (the Santa Fe Trail). As a result of this lack of development there were few factories or major businesses established in Tulsa until World Company moved there from Chicago in 1915 after forming a partnership with local businessmen James Mott & Others who had earlier founded Jenks Manufacturing Company (a food processor) in Jenksville; both companies continued operations until 1954 when World merged with United Cereals Incorporated which then merged with Nabisco Peanut Corporation becoming one giant corporation called Nabisco Brands Incorporation before being bought by Procter & Gamble AG in 1986 which eventually sold it back to Procter & Gamble again in 2002
