Sapulpa, Oklahoma is a small town located in central Oklahoma. The population was 1,799 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sapulpa County. The name comes from the Choctaw word "saputla". The first settler in Sapulpa was John Waddell, who arrived in 1881. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1902, Sapulpa's first post office was established, and the town had a population of just 10 people. In 1907, the town hall was built and served as the local government center for Sapulpa until it burned down in 1966. Sapulpa began to grow rapidly after World War II when federal war bonds were available for purchase. A large factory called OK-7 produced military supplies in the early 1950s and many people moved to Sapulpa to take advantage of this opportunity. During the 1960s and 1970s there were several construction projects that spurred growth in Sapulpa including an interstate highway interchange and a new high school building which replaced an old schoolhouse which had been used as a jail since 1912. A new library also opened during this time period which served as an important source of information for residents of Sapulpa and surrounding counties. In 2000, elected officials formed a commission to study plans to relocate saputla (a federally protected bird) from its current location near Eldorado Park due to concerns over negative impacts on its populations caused by development nearby. After months of research and contemplation, commissioners voted unanimously in favor of moving saputla to another more spacious area within SapULPA County where they could live without fear that they would be forcibly removed if their recommendation wasn't implemented into law
