Sapulpa, Oklahoma is a small town in Osage County, Oklahoma, located on the banks of the Arkansas River. It was founded in 1896 by settlers from Chicago, Illinois. The name "Sapulpa" means "place where the willows grow." In 1907, Sapulpa became the county seat of Osage County. The town was first settled by white people and their Indian guides who were travelling down the Arkansas River to trade with Indians. When they reached what is now Sapulpa they built a shelter out of logs and arrows were used as construction tools until crude nails could be found and used. They named their new settlement after an Indian chief's son who had been taken captive at war time. After two years of hard work the pioneers received word that General George Armstrong Custer had died in battle near Little Bighorn Canyon and all his men had been killed. This caused great sorrow among some of the settlers as it was thought that they would finally be able to meet their end like their leader. The pioneer women baked bread from flour brought over on wagons and fettered oxen for sale at local stores while men hunted game for subsistence purposes or took part in religious services at nearby churches which offered free food to those present. On July 4th, 1898, a public meeting was held to organize a government within this community with Orville Ladd as its first chairman/ Mayoralty position; however this organization only lasted one year due to lack of support from other communities along theArkansas River valley because there was no water available for irrigation nor any need for such a facility because lumbering became more important than agriculture during this period in American history In 1902-1903 several families moved into Sapulpa from Wichita Falls, Texas due to improved transportation available through railroad projects completed during that decade including: The Wichita Falls & Tulsa Railroad (now Interstate 35), which connected Wichita Falls with Tulsa; also known as The Great Southern Railway since it passed through many small towns; these projects made possible developed farms around Sapulpa making it possible for farmers in Central Oklahoma City to go shopping at local stores while living close enough not only to get products but also affordable prices
