Sapulpa is an unincorporated community in Noble County, Oklahoma, United States. It lies on the banks of the Arkansas River, east of Tulsa. The post office was established in 1907, and closed in 1951. Sapulpa is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Sapulpa were the Cherokee and their allies who migrated from Georgia in 1827. They built a few temporary huts along the riverbank before moving inland to new land. By 1878, they had founded a town named after themselves, Sapulpa (meaning "water-edge"). The name was changed to Sapulpa in 1907 because it became difficult to find a local water supply at that location. In 1951, Sapulpa's ZIP code was moved within Tulsa's boundaries so that it could be adjacent to Midtown area which would later become known as Downtown Tulsa. Residents of Sapulpa voted not to move and continue using their original ZIP code until 1985 when it was again moved within Tulsans' boundaries when Midtown became too developed for its residents and they decided to keep their original zip code permanently
