The Shawnee Airforce Base was founded in 1947 by the United States government. The base is home to the 9th Bomb Wing, which is responsible for providing air support for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The wing has also been involved in numerous other missions over the years, such as conducting airstrikes against targets on Mexican soil during Operation Desert Storm. Since its inception, the Air Force has given many gifts to local residents and businesses. One of these donations came in the form of a new hangar at the base that was dedicated in 2006. This donation allowed for an increase in storage space for planes at the airport and also helped to improve infrastructure there. Additionally, a gift from the Air Force in 2002 gave $5 million to Shawnee schools. This money went towards building new classrooms and renovating existing ones so that they could better serve students. Overall, it seems that the Air Force has been very generous with its time and resources over the years. The Shawnee Air Force Base gift history goes back to the early 1940s when the United States Air Force started a gift program for its members. In 1941, they donated a plane and some tools to the base. The Program continued in 1942 when they gifted a jeep and four rifles. In 1943, they gave a bomber and an armament store. The next year, 1944, they gave a B-29 bomber and four guns to thebase. In 1945, they gifted two fighter planes and four ammunition stores. Finally, in 1946, they gave a P-51 Mustang fighter plane and four bombs tothebase.
Shawnee is a city in United States Oklahoma and the county seat of Graham County. The population was 17,489 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Graham County and third-largest city in Oklahoma. In 2009, Forbes magazine listed Shawnee as one of the "10 Best Small Towns to Live In." Shawnee was founded by emigrants from Kansas City, Missouri in 1881. The first post office was established in 1882. The townsite was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who fought with Indian Chief Osage during the Black Hills War (1876-1877). A schoolhouse and log cabin were built on what is now First Street near Nowata Avenue in 1886. By 1907, Shawnee had a church, library, two stores, four residences and 100 people. In 1916 it became an incorporated town when all of present day Graham County merged into its boundaries. On December 20th of that year it had a total population of 24 residents; 10 men and 10 women! A new fire station/community hall/park has been built on Main Street since then which served as the primary local government structure until 2004 when it was replaced by the current City Hall building which also serves as the primary municipal building for Shawnee andGraham Counties! The first civic election held within Shawnee took place on November 3rd 1898 with nine residents voting out of a possible thirteen ballots cast! In 1907 an addition to Shawnee’s original one mile square block plot of land south east corner First street & Third Ave were added to make up what is now downtown or Old Town area! Some old buildings still remain downtown including: The Masonic Temple (built 1892), Mrs Sweeney’s grocery store (built 1903) & Mrs Foley’s restaurant (opened 1910). Downtown also includes some early 19th century homes such as: Griggs House ( Built 1856 ), Ira House (& 2 other houses) ( Built 1865 ), McKnight House (& 2 other houses) (Built 1870 ), Hubbard House (& 1 other house) & Hinkle’s Depot wagon shop (& 1 other house). These structures are currently used as housing units for citizens living within same blocks or contiguous areas inside & outside downtown limits only!!! Shawnee experienced rapid growth starting around 1940 due to World War II military production activity along both its eastern border where Tulsa lies& western border where McAlester Lies!! This growth continued through various expansions thru annexation by neighboring townships over ensuing years culminating with full cityhood status on January 15th 1959!!! Prior thereto there were several attempts at annexed territory but all resulted either in rejection or incorporation back into ShawnEE after meeting certain jurisdictional requirements ie: no water service available within corporate limits; etc…. This incorporation provided many advantages such as tax breaks like free parking permit dispensation;etc….. resulting in an initial payroll increase of 50% over earlier levels!! As can be seen from this paper much progress has been made since then especially given today's global economic environment…… nonetheless much remainsto be done especially given our community's limited budget !!
The Air Force has a rich history that can be traced back to World War I when American pilots volunteered to fight in Europe. The Air Force was created on July 17, 1947 as part of the United States Armed Forces. The first aircraft were purchased by the Air Force with funds raised from taxes and donations. By the end of 1950, more than 1,500 planes had been bought and delivered to service members around the world. In 1955, the USAF beganOperation Northwoods which aimed to alarm America's enemies about possible military action against them should they choose to become involved in a Cold War conflict without our help. Although its purpose was not realized, Operation Northwoods caused a significant rift between the United States and its allies. The next year saw an even larger purchase when President Eisenhower decided to buy 74 McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom fighter jets for use by the USAF. ThisPurchase marked beginning of what is now known as "The Aircraft Era." During this time period, air force aircraft underwent many modifications and were used for various missions including bombing campaign in Korea and providing support for Operation Overlord during World War II. By 1968, there were over 2,000 airplanes operating within the USAF inventory; this number has since grown to 4,000 airplanes today! One of the most memorable moments during this era occurred when two McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle jet fighters flown by Captains Richard Modra (now retired) and Gary Cheever (now deceased) participated in an airborne operation called "Eagle Sweep" which successfully destroyed eighteen targets within minutes while flying at high altitude! Despite their accomplishments during Eagle Sweep, both captains lost their lives in accidents subsequent to their assignment. Today's airforce gift history begins with Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft which have replaced all previous types of USAF airplanes throughout its entire fleet! These newest gifts signify progress rather than stagnation as they come into contact with everyday people all over America!
