Shawnee is a small town in Warren County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Shawnee is located on the Arkansas River and is bordered by Tulsa to the north, Muskogee to the east, and Poteau to the south. The downtown area has two blocks of square brick buildings built in 1907 and 1909 as a post office and bank. In 1880 it became Shawnee when James Auld moved his family from nearby Sulphur Springs to this location after purchasing land from General Custer during his ill-fated campaign against Wichita Indians in 1879. The township was organized on November 3, 1889 at which time there were only 54 residents living in 94 acres (31 hectares). Shawnee experienced rapid growth following World War II when many young men enlisted in military service or left home to fight in wars all over Europe and Asia. By 1960 there were 1,145 people living here with a total of 511 businesses that employed 2,527 people. During this same time period Shawnee also saw its first professional basketball team playing intramural games at local high school baseball fields until disbanding in 1962 due to lack of funding

Shawnee is a small town in northeastern Oklahoma, United States. The Shawnee word "shawn" means "place of thunder." The first white settlers in the area were the Choctaw and Pottawatomie Indians. They arrived around 1819 and built the first permanent settler's cabin in what is now Shawnee. In 1828, the Miami tribe moved into the area, and by 1830, Shawnee had three churches, a dispensary, and a school. By 1840, there were over 20 residents. The early years of Shawnee's history were tumultuous. On July 4th of that year, following a long war with other Indian groups including the Creek Nation, General James Kossuth discovered and destroyed an Indian village near modern-day Shawnee while on his march to capture Tulsa (the future Tulsa) from its Creek occupants. This led to an intense cultural clash between Native Americans and European settlers that continues to this day. One of the most famous incidents associated with this period was when Chief Tecumseh challenged English Major Samuel Morse to a duel for control of Lake Erie after Morse attempted to build an railroad through his territory. In 1863 during American Civil War Northwest Territory Governor George Armstrong Custer ordered all Indian nations living east of Wichita Falls into central Kansas under military command as part of President Abraham Lincoln's Peace Revival movement; this included most of what is now Oklahoma Territory. As part of their agreement not to fight against each other any longer they surrendered all their firearms which was good for about six months but then they had to start getting them back again because they couldn't use them without registration with government or possible execution if caught with them Shawnee did notsurrender until 1865 after some backchannel talks with Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant got them out before it became too costly
