The USS Shawnee was a providential gift from the United States to Great Britain in 1898. She served as part of the Royal Navy's first Pacific Squadron and made several trips to China during the Boxer Rebellion. After her return to England, she was used as an experimental ship for Marine Corps training at Devonport. In 1906, she was recommissioned into the Royal Navy and served as flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet until 1912. She then underwent a refit at Osborne Dockyard before being placed in service with the Indian Ocean Squadron in 1916. During World War I, she served as flagship of Atlantic Squadron and Channel Fleet before being decommissioned in 1921. Her ultimate fate is unknown but she is now preserved onshore at Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.
Shawnee, Oklahoma is a small town located in the counties of Ottawa and Kiowa. The population of Shawnee was 5,529 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for both Ottawa and Kiowa counties. The name Shawnee comes from the Cherokee word წხო shawniyi meaning "a place where deer graze." The history of Shawnee can be traced back to 1821 when a man named James Fenton arrived in what is now Shawnee County. He founded what is now known as Fentontown on the banks of the Arkansas River. At that time, Shawnee was part of Mexico and there were no English speakers living in the area. James Fenton's town became an important center for trade with Native Americans and settlers who lived around him began to call him "Boss." In 1836, General Andrew Jackson appointed Colonel David Butler as military governor of Indian Territory. Butler decided that Fentontown should become his new headquarters because he felt it would be easier to keep track of Indians residing in the area than if they were housed at Fort Smith in Arkansas. When Butler arrived in 1863, he discovered that many local farmers had joined forces with Confederate forces during the American Civil War and had taken over much of Indian Territory east of Kansas City. This caused problems for Butler because he wanted to protect Indian Country from federal seizures by Union troops but also maintain some degree of order within it so that white people could live Amongst their own people without fear of attack or harassment from Native Americans. In 1865, after suffering heavy losses at Fort Donelson near Chattanooga, Tennessee, Union soldiers withdrew from Indian Territory and Four Day's Battle signaled the end of America's participation in World War I which left muchofIndian Territory open to Federal seizure by Union Forces under President Woodrow Wilson (1912-1916). When President Wilson announced his plan to purchase all remaining land belonging to Native Americans in all US Territories except Alaska (2/3rds owned), including Shawnee County, most residents chose not to sell their land due to fears about being forced off their homes by Government officials. Another gift from the navy is an amphibious assault vessel called HCN-1 Arleigh Burke which was donated by America on 20 October 2001 after being decommissioned at Naval Station Singapore three years earlier due to rusting problems with her superstructure!
