Shawnee, Oklahoma is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Shawnee was founded by white settlers in 1883 and named for the Shawnees who had migrated there from Illinois some time earlier. The first post office was established in 1888. The town became an important trade center on the Arkansas River during the 1800s due to its location at the mouth of that river and its position between Wichita and Topeka. By 1915, Shawnee had a population of 2,200 people and was one of the largest towns in Muskogee County. However, because of its remote location it never really recovered after World War II due to lack of industry or other opportunities. In 1978, Shawnee voters approved a $1 million bond issue to help improve local infrastructure such as roads and schools. That same year it also became home to the No Child Left Behind program's headquarters for Kansas City area school districts. In recent years Shawnee has seen some redevelopment with several new businesses being built along main Street including two restaurants and a day-care center as well as several homes being constructed near Main Street Downtown. Some efforts have been made to increase tourism which is growing around town but still lags behind other nearby towns in terms of visitor numbers
