Tahlequah is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. The Tahlequah post office has been in operation since 1907. The first white settlers in what is now Muskogee County arrived in 1867 and founded the village of Tahlequah on the west side of the current town square. About one-seventh of the original residents remain today, making it one of the most ethnically diverse towns in Oklahoma. The area around present-day Tahlequah was originally part of Creek Nation and was known as "Creek Bottom". In 1881, General George Armstrong Custer's forces besieged and captured Creek Chief Washita's village near modern day Tahlequah during his Prairie Campaign against Indian hostilities. This event helped populate much of central Oklahoma with white settlers after years of frontier conflict between Native Americans and American colonists. In 1907, two local businessmen – Harry Truman and Wernher von Braun – purchased land east of present-day Tahlequah on which they built a small community called Westville. When World War I began, many patriotic Americans moved to wartime military camps throughout the Midwest to help support their country during wartime production shortages; some 100 people live there to this day as ghosts or war survivors from that era.
