Small batch coffee history in Albany, Oregon begins with the early days of the coffee industry. In 1892, Dutchman Jacobus Brouwer started a small grocery store on State Street in Albany. The store stocked only beans from small-scale roasters in neighboring towns and had to order all of its ingredients from Switzerland. Brouwer's coffee was first sold at his store and soon became popular among local residents. He eventually opened a larger establishment and continued to sell his coffee until 1970. The legacy of Dutchman Jacobus Brouwer is still felt today as small batch coffee continues to be a popular choice in the city. In the early 1900s, Albany saw an influx of Italians who were moving into the city to work in mills and factories. This new population brought their own style of espresso which helped start what would become known as Italian espresso culture in Albany. With this influx of immigrants came new ideas about how to make coffee - some more traditional than others. Albany, Oregon is a small town in Linn County, Oregon. It was founded in 1881 by J.D. Power and Company as the nucleus of a new mining camp called "Pine Springs." The name Albany came from an early settler's choice for its location - on the banks of the Willamette River - because it was thought to be auspiciously situated for trade with China. The town quickly developed into a commercial center, and by 1907 had become home to over 200 residents. The post office was established in 1898, and until 1941 it functioned as the junction point between Portland and Linn County. In 1915, Albany became one of two towns in Oregon (the other being Salem) to be granted charter status as citys. By World War II, Albany had become an important military installation; its airfield served as primary staging ground for Allied operations against Japan during the war. After the war ended, Albany experienced rapid growth as both a bedroom community for Portland and an agricultural center for surrounding counties. In recent years, however, Albany has been struggling economically; its population has declined from its peak of 500 in 2000 to just over 300 today. Albany, Oregon is a small town located in the Klickitat Valley of southeastern Oregon. The population was 827 at the 2010 census, and it is part of the Albany-Beaverton School District. The first known inhabitants of what is now Albany were Paiutes who established a villages on the banks of the Willamette River in 1823. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1847 when David Soddy, a prospector and entrepreneur, founded a logging town named Soddy City on land he had purchased from the Yakima Nation. In 1850, Albany was renamed after Albany County, New York, home to many early pioneers. The late 1800s saw an influx of homesteaders and farmers arrive to settle in what is now Albany Township including J.J. Butchart and his brothers Isaac and George Butchart who operated a beefpacking company that transported cattle from Central America through Oregon to market in Seattle. By 1910, there were 486 people living in Albany Township with 88% being white Americans while Black Americans made up 2%. In 1911, Albany became part of Clackamas County when it was separated from Multnomah County due to population growth rates which exceeded those for Clackamas County by 5%. At the same time as its incorporation into Clackamas County, it also gained city status under ordinance No. 2085 passed by voters on July 1st 1911 which provided: "That said new city be governed by its own charter as provided by law; shall have all powers granted or ceded to cities by law; exclusive jurisdiction over streets within its limits; may issue bonds not exceeding $1 000 per annum; may make contracts without prior written consent of city clerk; Shall sue and be sued only in tort (except for injuries done merely by accident), notwithstanding any statute providing otherwise." A variety of businesses opened up around this time such as grocery stores (Fry's Bros., Grocery Outlet) as well as bars (The Captain's Table), cafes (The Gilded Cage) and bowling alleys (Lumberyard). With rapid economic growth came social unrest which can be seen throughout history with consequences for communities like Albany where crime rates skyrocketed during this time period culminating with one nightmarish event that left two people dead outside The Gilded Cage bar – an act that led to public outcry against alcohol abuse across much of America at this point! In 1958 Attorney General Jay Cooke announced plans for Interstate 95 which would connect Portland with Eugene via Interstate 5 rather than through Salem/Eugene creating opportunities for more commerce and development along I-5 while reducing traffic levels along I-95 causing local businesses clustered near I-5 to thrive but also contributing significantly to high levels of crime throughout the area until progress was finally made towards improvement beginning in earnest starting around 1990s culminating with reopening of I-5 between Portland & Eugene making downtown again viable
