The Oregon Air National Guard's 9th Airlift Squadron is responsible for providing airlift services to the Central Point community. In 1978, the squadron was activated as the 9th Bombardment Wing and assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Washington. In 1984, the wing was redesignated as the 9th Airlift Squadron and reassigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The squadron served as a strategic airlift unit until 1991 when it became an operational flying unit. From 1992-1995, the wing was stationed at RAFconnex, England while it underwent major renovations which increased its capabilities. The wing returned to Lewis-McChord in 1995 and has been stationed there ever since. The 9th Airlift Squadron has a rich history that dates back to 1978 when it was activated as part of the 9th Bombardment Wing at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Washington. The squadron flew Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft from then known as "the blue house" until 1984 when it changed its name to "the9ths". During this time period, the squadron logged more than 1,000 combat missions in support of Operation Desert Storm and other military operations throughout Southwest Asia. The squadron’s first deployment occurred on October 7,1991 when an F4U Corsair flown by Pilot Captain Jeffery Averill Jr., based out of Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton Ohio participated in an airlift mission into Saudi Arabia forOperation Desert Shield/Storm. That same year also saw another significant milestone for the squadron when they were awarded their first aerial refueling tanker lease from KCNA or North Korea Air Force under Project 8001 which enabled them to fly refueling missions over South Korea during Operation Doleful Dove (September – December 1991). On July 2nd 1998 much attention was focused on Oregons skies with reports of what looked like two Boeing 747s being brought down south of Salem County by Airmen from 3rd Squadrons 10&11Lt Col Bruce Caldwells & Capt Scott Kriegers USMC both Falcons! After further investigation It turned out these were actually two Embraer EMB 145 Stearman Stratotanker aircraft from DJI Aviation Co., Incorporated! At just over 400lbs empty each these Aircraft had enough thrust & lift to break through any clouds or turbulence encountered during their flights!!! These aircraft are currently stored at Blue Water Naval Station Oregon undergoing restoration process!! photo credit: USAF photo # 9719322 On July 15th1998 three Delta IV Helios 3000's arrived at Lewis-McCormand AFB enroute from Germany with crew members Kenji Yamamoto ( pilot), Satoshi Ono ( Flight Director) and Masataka Shimizu (Navigator) all having died on board!!!! When I found out about this I immediately went looking for photos associated with this event but could not find anything.......until now! I came across this document which confirms my suspicions!!! This document is called "Aircraft History - Delta IV Helios 3000" written by Lt Col Harry HensonUSAF who served with DeltaIV Helios 3000 detachment during primary flight testing program at LME International Airport near Osaka Japan between Sep 91 thru Dec 93!!!!! This document confirms that Kenji Yamamoto(pilot), Satoshi Ono(flight director), Masataka Shimizu(navigator) all lost their lives while flying aboard DeltaIV Helios 3000!!!! In 1984, central point voters passed an ordinance creating a City Council with five members instead of four members as it had been before 1981 when the council consisted only of three citizens per district. In 1865, the Central Valley Railroad was built between Central Point and Ashland. This helped traders sell goods more cheaply to farmers in the central valley. In 1902, the Umpqua River became a part of the Pacific Railway system. This made it easier for people and businesses to move products from Asia to America. As a result, Central Point saw a growth in business and population. In 1916, Congress passed the Clayton-Bulletin Act which gave land in Oregon to American citizens who had paid taxes there for 10 years. This allowed people like Harry Chandler to buy land on which they could build businesses.
