The United States Navy has deployed Gift History in Central Point, Oregon since 1951. The history of the gift program is reflective of the Naval Family and its relationship with service members. The gift tradition in the United States Navy reflects that of the family itself- through exchanging gifts to those who have served or are serving. The history of naval gift programs can be traced back to World War I when sailors brought home souvenirs from Europe. After World War II, sailor's generosity was exhibited during the Korean War by sending food and drinks to troops on the peninsula. In 1959, a navy officers' club in Miami Beach, Florida initiated a gift program for enlisted personnel which continues to this day. This program became known as "Gift History" and allows Sailors and their families from all branches of service to exchange unique items such as jewelry, watches, cars etc., for service members' clothing and equipment. In 1951, USS Monitor (BB-59) was decommissioned at San Francisco Naval Shipyard after serving as flagship of Destroyer Squadron 24 (DesRon 24). Her then-new owner, The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), decided that she should be donated to the navy for use as a ship museum. As part of her donation process, PMA met with representatives from all branches of Service including Sailors and their families who participated in Gift History events at San Francisco Naval Shipyard where they contributed surplus military material such as helmets and coats. From then on Gifts History grew rapidly throughout America with ships being donated by every branch of Service. Unfortunately due to budget cuts made within the naval services over time GiftsHistory has declined along with other navy programs but it remains an important tradition in our community which helps keep our sailors connected with their loved ones back home while they serve our country overseas!

The United States Navy has been providing gifts to other nations for centuries. The tradition of giving gift-wrapped presents began with the Spanish Armada in 1598, when Admiral Pedro de Vega sent a box of wine and cheese as a present to King Philip II of Spain. Over time, Naval commanders have sent smaller boxes of goods as thank-you presents to their allies and enemies. Today, the United States Navy sends large packages of gifts to friends and allies all over the world through our various shipping routes. These shipments come in many different shapes and sizes, but all share one common goal: To show our appreciation for your help during wartime or any other special occasion. Some of the most famous Naval gift history includes the USS Constitution MuseumShip Gift Collection (1946), which was given to Peru by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt; the USS George Washington Museum Ship Gift Collection (1968), which was given to Greece by then- Prime Minister Edward M. Heath; and the USS Enterprise MuseumShip Gift Collection (1999), which was givento Japan by then- Emperor Hirohito in memory of his great navy ship. While some gifts are specific to wars or military activities, others are more general in nature. For example, the USS Abraham Lincoln MuseumShip Gift Collection (1998)was donatedto Bosnia by then-President Clinton in 1998 after NATO intervened in that country’s civil war; andthe USS John F Kennedy MuseumShip Gift Collection (1995),whichwasgivento Croatia bythen Croatian President Franjo Tudjman following its secession from Yugoslavia in 1991.)These donations offer a unique perspective on US Naval culture and history—and give individuals from around the world an opportunity to learn about America’s global presence!
