The first five brothers were instrumental in helping build up the community and developing their business interests. They also helped to start the first school in the area and recruited many local farmers to settle near the city limits. Cornelius quickly grew into one of Oregon's most important cities due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Snake River and its abundance of natural resources such as timber and coal. By 1924, however,Cornelius' reputation for prosperity had begun to decline due to social unrest accompanying rapid economic growth across much of North America during that decade-the Great Depression-. In 2001, however, Corneliauis experienced an exciting resurgence thanks to efforts spearheaded by Mayor Donny Waldron and City Councilmember Corey Nighborhood Services Committee Chairwoman Jackie Fusaiola which has seen significant revitalization within both physically and economically blighted areas throughout downtown; creating new jobs opportunities for locals while preserving some historically significant buildings/ districts like The Market Place which have been vacant for years now but are finally seeing renewed interest given their deteriorated state). overall this redevelopment is having positive effects on not just Downtown but also adjacent neighborhoods including West End where there is renewed interest in retail ventures; East End which has seen increased employment opportunities thanks largely to new development along I-5 outside of town; Rose Garden which is seeing revived activity along Seventh Street South; while also providing access into Downtown core via restored streetcar lines

The area now known as Cornelius, Oregon was first settled by the U.S. government in 1853 as part of the Yakima Nation. The town was founded on the site of an early fort that was built by U.S. soldiers to control Indian populations during the Gold Rush period. The fort was abandoned in 1855 and the town began to grow up around it. In 1864, Cornelius became a county seat of Multnomah County and remained so until 1927 when it was moved to Salem.
