The city is located on the Willamette River and has a population density of . The first European explorers to visit what is now Multnomah County were Mormon missionaries in 1846. They named the area "Oregon City" after General James K. Polk's campaign to gain admission to the United States as a free country. Portland State University opened its doors on December 3, 1906 with only eight students enrolled in physical education classes housed in two buildings on SW Morrison Street – one across from Pioneer Courthouse Square and one near Interstate 5 bridge over Morrison Creek. Classes were held in large classrooms outdoors until 1912 when they moved into new quarters inside PSU's current Main Campus Building (now Schoolhouse Hall).
