The name stuck for many years because it was one word (the only letter out of thirteen) that could be found all throughout multitudes of white cornfields stretching away into rolling hills behind which lay dusty sugar plantations and rich coffee bean fields; miles beyond them stretched vast stretches of open desert covered with scrub oak trees; while not far from this secluded corner stood an impenetrable range Of snowcapped mountains—all without human habitation or appearance save for occasional herds Of cattle turning at some lonely farmstead or milling Along the banks of a rapid stream which emptied Into the Willamette opposite—seeming almost like an oasis amid all this wilderness! In 1887 Folsom & Company built their flour mill just north of downtown Gresham on SW Third Street (now SW Morrison). This mill became known as Folsom Field after its founder John Folsom (1836-1912). The mill continued to produce flour until 1957 when it closed due to technological advancements combined with competition from more efficient mills elsewhere in Oregon. today partofFolsomField has been preserved as part of Salem State University's College Park campus where students can walk across partsofthemill floor still used for grinding cornmeal
