Gresham, Oregon is a city in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 26,724 at the 2010 census. Gresham was founded in 1868 by George A. Gresham and named for his father-in-law, John C. Gresham. It became an incorporated town in 1907. The City of Gresham consolidated with the Town of McClellan on February 14, 2006 to form a single- municipality with a population of 46,827 residents as of July 1st, 2010. The first people to inhabit what is now Gresham were the Klamath Indians who lived along the Willamette River from about 7500 BC until around 1800 AD when they were pushed out by the local Native Americans such as the Klamath People and their allies led by Chief Josephine (Carrie) Smith. The area that is now downtown Gresham was first settled in 1868 by George A. Gresham and named after his father-in-law John C. GresHAM who had arrived there earlier that year from Illinois with wagonloads of goods to start a new life in Clackamas County after purchasing land from Captain James Cook nearpresent day Salemburg Lake which he renamed "John C.'s Landing". The town was incorporated on January 10th 1907 and quickly grew due to its location close to both Salemburg Lake and Portland where people could find work during the early days of World War I because much of Oregon was still prohibition territory at that time During World War II many patriotic citizens worked on munitions plants located in nearby Scappoose and subsidiary towns such as Milwaukie On July 1st 1990 City of Gresham merged with Township of McClellan forming one municipality with a populationof 46 827 residents . This merger occurred due to increasing concerns about growth within both municipalities which were not able to keep up with rising demand for services and housing . In 2001 Mayor Tom Casey announced that plans were underway to build a new library within city limits which would allow for more housing development but it never happened
