Gresham grew quickly due to its location in a fertile valley and its access to water supplies. By 1861, the population had reached 1,500 residents. It was during this time that Gresham became an important hub for trade with surrounding counties and regions. In 1875, the town voted to become a city and it did so under the name of Gresham City. The city experienced rapid growth in the late 19th century due to its position as a regional center for agriculture and commerce. In 1920, GresHAM annexed neighboring unincorporated communities of Hermiston and Winterset in order to form a larger city with a total population of over 100,000 people.
