The United States Air Force deployment of the C-130 Hercules airlift in Hermiston, Oregon during the Vietnam War was a significant event. The gift history of this deployment can be traced back to 1967 when the United States Air Force activated the 173d Tactical Airlift Wing at McClellan Airport in Sacramento, California. This wing was composed of Lockheed L-188A Lodestar transports and flew cargo and passengers to and from Southeast Asia. In 1967, desire for USAF cargo transport aircraft had been increasing as strategic nuclear forces were increased in strength. The U.S. Navy's F8U Crusader was no longer capable of carrying nuclear weapons and was being retired at a rapid pace; however, it remained an option for USAF cargo transport needs due to its high fuel capacity and long range. The first Lockheed L-188A Lodestar operated by the 173d Tactical Airlift Wing arrived at McClellan Airport on October 1, 1967. It could carry up to sixty American military personnel or fifty civilian passengers with room for additional vehicles on either side of its fuselage. The Air Force deployed a number of gifts this year as part of its unit's "Thank You" program to recognize and appreciate the work of airmen. This year, the Air Force sent thank you cards, gift baskets, and even a helicopter ride for some of its enlisted members who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan. One of the most publicized deployments was that made to Baghdad in November. The Air Force donated two C-130 Hercules planes and crew chiefs from each plane were flown back to California on October 14th so that they could be displayed at the California Air National Guard hangar where they've been on display since December 2001. Other deployments this year included one to Kuwait for Operation Neptune's Spear and another to Qatar for Operation Gulf Shield. These deployments provide an opportunity not only for airmen to see their friends and family, but also give them a chance to serve their country in a way that is truly Reporter Unknown - with extended stays away from home!
In Hermiston, Oregon, the Air Force has been deploying gift history for many years. The tradition started with a Christmas present to the pilot of an A-10 Thunderbolt II fighter jet. Since then, members of the military and civilians have brought gifts to various recipients in support of their military service or hobbies.
Hermiston is a small town in Oregon located on the banks of the Columbia River. The population was 1,787 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hermiston-Wenatchee-Anglett micropolitan area. The town was founded in 1887 by John and Lillie Hermiston. The original name of the community was Bangor. After John Hermiston's death in 1888, his wife Lillie took over management and continued to use that name until her death in 1907. She bequeathed most of her estate to the town, which changed its name to Hermiston in 1910 after her death. The first store in Hermiston opened its doors on Main Street on July 1, 1887. The store was run by Mrs. Jane Haughey and Mr. George Fenton. A post office was established at Hermiston on December 10, 1888, and operated under that name until it closed on January 8, 1893 due to lack of customers. A church service was held at First Presbyterian Church on October 3, 1889; Reverend J P Haskell officiated as pastor for that day's services. In 1895, a sawmill established by Amos Crouch became operational and manufactured lumber from logs brought downriver from nearby Butte Falls Dam through an opening near what is now the intersection of Main Street and Umberto Boulevard). In 1897–98 there were two school districts represented: one serving Beech Grove (northwest corner) and south side oftowns; another covering north side only (east side between Seventh Avenue eastward to State street). In 1902/03 both school districts merged into one with new enrollments totaling 571 students for grades K-12; this merger created a single high school called “Oregon School District” High School which lasted until 1984 when it merged again with Wenatchee County High School creating “Hermiston-Wenatchee-Anglett HS” which still operates today as a four year high school! As far back as 1886 when John Hermiston founded Hermeston he did so knowing about Puget Sound Bridge being built across it for transportation purposes but never realized how impacts would have on his community because he would not see it completed until many years later

Hermiston is a small town in the Snake River Valley of Oregon, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bend–Doña Ana City–Phoenix, AZ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Hermiston were fur traders from Canada in 1827 and 1828. A post office was established in 1831, and the town began to grow rapidly due to its natural resources: coal, oil shale, gold, and lumber. The community had a school by 1840 and an hotel by 1850. In 1862, Hermiston became the capital of Oregon Territory after approval from Congress. The city's growth stopped as railroads came through the area and railroad transportation replaced travel by horse or wagon. In 1902, Hermiston formed a city government with a mayor and six council members; it continued to do so until 1969 when it merged into Bend. In 1969, Bend became the largest city in Oregon with over 100 thousand residents; however, Hermiston remained its second-largest municipality with around 50 thousand residents until 2000 when it merged into Phoenix again. Today, Hermiston is home to a small number of people who still rely on its natural resources for their livelihoods: coal mining allows for generation of power that helps keep homes warm during wintertime; oil shale drilling has allowed for development of several new housing developments; timber harvesting produces wood that is used for building materials such as cabinets and furniture; and ranching provides jobs for many locals including farmers who raise livestock along with other related activities such as fencing cattle or driving them to market
The first Europeans to explore Oregon were French fur traders in the early 1800s. The area around Hermiston was part of the Rogue River Colony, which was founded by Captain John McLoughlin in 1807. In 1809, McLoughlin and his men discovered gold near present-day Hermiston. Golden rush years followed as settlers prospected for this valuable resource. By 1830, Hermiston had a population of about 100 people and was the largest town in Oregon. In 1843, Portland became the capital of Oregon and Hermiston declined because it did not have a depot to receive goods from the new state. In 1848, however, both towns amalgamated to form Hermiston Village Improvement Company with a collective budget of $5,000. This company operated many mills and stores until 1907 when they were privatized and closed down.
