In 1967, four friends pooled their money together to purchase a rifle from Mr’s Harry Wigglesworth Sr., who had recently retired from his job at an armory in Salemburg, Oregon. Hermiston is a small town in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 605 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Hermiston was founded in 1877 and incorporated as a city on December 1, 1907. The community lies at an altitude of 5,685 feet (1,815 m) above sea level and its economy revolves around agriculture and ranching. The local creek system provides drinking water for most of the town and there are several small businesses that provide services to residents such as plumbing, locksmithing, lawn care and transportation. There are also three churches in Hermiston—the First Methodist Church which was built in 1881; the Second Methodist Church which was erected in 1915; and the Baptist church which was built in 1927. Hermiston has a rich history that began with pioneer days when mining took place here including silver mining operations conducted by John Dutton from 1872-1875 and George Hebard from 1876-1887. In 1899 The Oregonian published an article entitled "Hermitage: A Settlement Near Hermiston" about a group of men who had established themselves near what is now Hermiston after moving away from their mining camps near Willamette Falls due to health concerns related to Lead poisoning caused by lead ore mined nearby during those years. In 1916 Thomas Hanks began operating one of the first radio transmitters west of the Mississippi River when he connected his transmitter building with another building on Main Street in Hermiston. Hanks continued this activity until his death some time after World War II having helped develop western broadcasting technology as well as helping to promote it across North America before his death at age 91 on October 10, 1948 at his home located just south of Hermiston off I-5 along State Route 161 near Canby Bridge Road
