In 1876, the United States Marine Corps was formed as a result of the Spanish-American War. The Marines were given their first battalion in Oregon and later deployed to Guam and Manila Bay during World War I. They served in both the European and Pacific theaters of war before being disbanded in 1922. The Marines re-emerged during World War II as part of the United States Army. They served in Europe, Asia, and Africa before being disbanded again in 1945. The Marines were reactivated for service in Vietnam but were reduced to an infantry regiment after that conflict ended. They have since been stationed around the world with various units including a squadron at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan. The Marine Corps has received numerous awards throughout its history including five Presidential Unit Citations and four Congressional Medals of Honor. In Hermiston, Oregon, they are commemorated with a gift history that dates back to 1936 when local businessmen donated six rifles to be used by marines stationed at nearby NAS Portland Naval Supply Depot. From there, it would only be a matter of time until these gifts became something more tangible such as medals or weaponry!

The purpose of the gifts was not immediately clear, but some Marines began receiving what they believed were gifts when in fact they were full-fledged military equipment. In August 2009, Marine Task Force Southwest Asia received word that a large group of Marines would soon be deployed to their area of responsibility. As part of preparations for the deployment, Task Force Southwest Asia ordered gift baskets from various companies including Anello's Italian Gift Basket and Goodwill Industries. Many Marines speculate that the baskets may have been sent as part of propaganda against Islamic militants who had threatened violence against coalition forces if the gifts were not given. After leaving Iraq and Afghanistan in early 2010, many Marines started receiving packages at their homes containing new or modified military gear or appliances. Some soldiers within Task Force Southwest Asia believe that these gifts were sent specifically with the intent of disrupting coalition operations by providing insurgents with an enemy target to shoot at without having to worry about consequences.

Hermiston is a small town in Oregon, located on the eastern border of the state. The population was 5,402 at the 2010 census. Hermiston is home to two universities- Pacific Northwest University and Southern Oregon University- and many businesses including Bechtel Corporation, Nike, Intel, and BP. The community celebrated its centennial in 2009. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hermiston were Spanish traders who journeyed up the Willamette River in 1811. They named the area Santa Cruz de la Sierra because of its high mountain range that separated it from California. In 1843, John Sommers founded a wagon train from Los Angeles down the Snake River valley to Portland before turning northwest along the Columbia River into Oregon. He named his new town after Scottish patriot Sir James Douglas (1784-1836), who had helped drive British troops out of North America during the War of 1812. In 1861, while fighting in Kansas against Federalists under Ulysses S Grant, Douglas was captured and held as a POW near present day Hermiston for six months before being released on parole near Coeur d'Alene on February 15th 1861 . He returned to Canada where he took part in Confederation as a delegate from Vancouver Island . After arriving back in Portland he immediately started negotiations for an Oregon Territory that would include parts of what are now Idaho, Nevada and Arizona On July 4th 1863 Douglas was appointed Territorial Governor with authority over all land east of Interstate 90 except for pockets inside Washington County which were subject to Washington County Sheriff Tom Neely . Hermiston is a small town in the Klamath National Forest, about an hour's drive from Portland. The community was first established in 1899 as a station on the Oregon Central Railroad. It was renamed Hermiston in 1907 after A.M. Hermiston, a local rancher and lumberman. In 1951, the town incorporated and began to grow rapidly due to its location near the opening of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The population reached 6,000 by 1970, but declined to 3,500 by 2000. At that point, development around Hermiston became more sporadic and commercialized than rural subsistence farming had been before; many residents now work inPortland or other nearby cities. Today, Hermiston remains a small town with close-knit relationships among its citizens and their surrounding agricultural communities; it also retains some of its old-time cultural attractions including several churches and schools dating back to 1899. The most recent stop on my hiking/snowmobile trip through the Klamath National Forest was at Gold Beach State Beach which overlooks Clearwater Lake where I watched several Bald Eagles flying overhead while taking pictures (and enjoying some good Summit Gulch skiing).

The Hermiston Manufacturing Company was founded in 1868, and produced agricultural equipment, such as tractors and mud hoes. In 1915, the company merged with Wacoal to form Wacoal-Hermiston Corporation. In 1984, the corporation was purchased by Valeo Corporation.
