Keizer is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, United States. It is located on the banks of the Deschutes River and lies on the border of Polk County and Benton County. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. Keizer's name comes from George Washington's estate at Keizer Lake. The first permanent settler in what is now Keizer was James Wetherbee, who arrived in 1847. He erected a log cabin on land that he purchased from Chief Joseph Kautz. In 1851, David Bancroft settled here and built a sawmill and gristmill. In 1882, Ezra Stowell named his mill "Keiser" after George Washington's estate at Keizer Lake which he had visited while exploring Oregon for his father-in-law (Stowell had married Washington's sister). By 1886, there were six mills in operation in KEIZER with a total output of $1 million annually! During World War II, KEIZER played an important role as an airfield for military operations in the Northwest mountains; it housed two major airfields—the Army Air Force base nearby became known as "Keizer" during this time (it still does), and KEIZER also served as a base for Japanese forces during their occupation of northwest America during World War II. Today KEIZER continues to be an important community with its busy local economy based primarily on agriculture and commerce; it has also been home to several dozen businesses over the years since its incorporation as a city into Portland Township government in 1998!
