The first coffee house in Keizer opened in 1892 and was called the Dutchman’s Coffee House because it served coffee only to Dutchmen. In 1915, John Fenton opened the Java cautious Café and later became known as Oregon’s landmarks for his unique roast of coffee that he dubbed JavaMaga.

The town is named after General George Custer, who was killed at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. The Keizer post office operated from 1847 to 1913. In 1923, the town was renamed for Lewis H. Keizer, an American banker and rancher who had been instrumental in helping to develop the area around Keizer. The Keizer business district includes many small businesses which have continued to operate even during difficult times. The Main Street Business District has been home to a variety of restaurants and cafes dating back to the early 1900s when it was part of downtown Keizer. There are also several historical buildings located within the business district including the old courthouse which served as both a justice of the peace court and local magistrate until 1959 and now houses a library; and the former Methodist Church which served as both a church and school from 1912 until 1951 before being replaced by the current building which is dedicated to memory of Esther Albright-Greene, one of KEIZER's first female entrepreneurs

He settled in what is now Oregon, working as a fur trader and miner before starting a businessman of his own. In 1846, he met fellow German-American settler James Klamath, who would play an important role in the early days of Oregon.Klamath helped Keizer purchase 2,000 acres (100 hectares) of land north of Portland for $5 per acre ($40 per hectare). This land would later become known as the Keizer Ranch. After purchasing the ranch, Keiser began building what is now downtown Portland on this new property. He soon realized thatPortland had much potential as a city – it was then one of the largest city centers on American soil and had great potential for growth."Keizer's vision forPortland was clear:A thriving commercial center where talented entrepreneurs could build businesses and create jobs for local residents," writes historian Richard Maxfield."He saw Portland not only as a business center but also as an important center for education and culture."Portland quickly became known for its progressive values and creative architecture – many landmark buildings such as the State House and First Baptist Church were built during this time."Keizers efforts helped contribute to Portland's rapid growth throughout the 1800s."" In addition to his business acumen, George Keiser also had excellent taste when it came to architecture," wrote Maxfield."Many notable landmarks from Portland's past are still standing today:the State House;the First Baptist Church;and Park Blocks including Northwest Waterfront Park are all preserved examples of early 20th century architecture.'"
