Lake Oswego is a small, rural town in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Lake Oswego Township were the Toke family who settled on the east side of the lake in 1851. In 1857, John Troup and his brother James founded a wagon company called The Oregon Mail which transported goods between Portland and Salt Lake City. In 1863, John Atherton built a gristmill on the west side of the lake. By 1865, there were twenty-one businesses operating in Lake Oswego township: six grain mills (the largest being owned by Hyrum & Sons), thirteen sawmills (owned by J. Bower & Son), four churches (First Presbyterian and Methodist Episcopal; First Baptist was organized in 1870), two hotels (the Central Hotel and State House Hotel), four stores (the Blacksmith Shop & Store, Harper's Millinery store, Pacific Coal Merchants store and Wagon Works store), one farmstead (Fenway Farms) and one schoolhouse (Ranney School). In 1881–1882 Superintendent of Schools Herman Gregg developed an educational system that included evening classes for children up to twelve years old; day schools for children eight through twelve years old; an agricultural course for girls beginning at nine months old; a machine shop program developing into an engineering program; seventy-six boys entered high school during Gregg's term as Superintendent while 448 girls took evening classes or did agricultural work. At that time only men could vote although most residents lived close to their families so they had little choice but to participate in government affairs until after World War I when women received voting rights nationwide. In 1907 locals formed a library association with funding from local property owner Mrs. Ladd Purdy which opened its doors on October 1st under guidance from then Mayor James Sutherlin with books donated by Drs., Charles Scribner and Augustus Earle Cooke Sr.. With over 4500 volumes it remains one of Oregon’s largest public libraries today! After staying open for eighty years Mrs Purdy sold her interest in 1907 to become co-founder along with her husband Fred Phelps of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints who also served as President pro tempore from 1959 until his death in 1978 . Reverend Harry Smith served as Interim Director from 1989 until his retirement effective December 31st 2000 .
Lake Oswego was first settled in 1847 by the Oregon Trail party, who named it after Oregon Territory Governor George Morrison. The town of Lake Oswego was founded in 1849 on land donated by James Fenton, and the population grew rapidly from its initial dozen residents to over one hundred by 1860. The townsquare, built around a small irrigation canal, became an important commercial center for the surrounding agricultural region. In the late 1800s and early 1900s,WWI led to a increase in military activity in and around Lake Oswego; during World War I, there were several skirmishes between American troops and local militia groups. By 1920, however, much of the combat had ended and the town had largely recovered from its wartime damage. In recent years, Lake Oswego has experienced rapid growth as a result of both its natural resources (such as oil and gas) and new development; in 2016, it overtookPortland as Oregon's third most populous city.
