Smith, who named it for John Medford, a British general who had served with the United States in Mexico. The first recorded name for Medford was Grantsville. The town grew rapidly after it was platted in 1849, thanks to its location on the fertile Medford Plateau and its proximity to the growing port of Salem. In 1860, the city passed an Act of Legislature providing for a high school and library. In 1872, Medford became part of the newly created Klondike Territory; as a result, its population swelled even more than that of Oakland (now downtown Portland). In 1902, when Oregon became a state, Medford became one of its original cities; it remained so until 1959. During that time, it experienced many highs and lows: during World War II it supported military activity as a vital port; following the war it experienced rapid growth as people began moving into what would become known as "the newMedford". However, by1965there were only 68 residents living in Medford proper while 3200 people lived elsewhere within its boundaries – most notably in nearby Salem and Hillsboro – contributing significantly to population decline over ensuing years. It wasn’t until 1990 that median household income reached $60k for all residents which has seen continued growth since then (+4% last year).
