On November 3, 1943, the United States Air Force deployed a gift to Newberg, Oregon in commemoration of World War II. The gift was a Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk fighter plane. The aircraft had been donated by the owner of the local airfield, Major John H. Huffman. The Kittyhawk was used as part of Operation Torch which led to Nazi Germany's surrender on August 14, 1945. The RAF also contributed two Spitfires toOperation Market Garden which involved flying over military targets in Holland on September 10th and 11th 1944.
