Newberg was founded in 1876 by settlers from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. The name "Newberg" means “place where new growth abounds” in Swedish. In 1892, citizens of Newberg voted to change their name to Portland because they felt thatPortland would have more staying power with its unique history and culture. The first post office opened in Newberg on December 8, 1893. By 1915, there were over 50 businesses in Newberg serving a population of 3,500 people. In 1918-1919 the city built a school which served grades K-12 and remains in use today as Central High School; it was the first high school west of the Rocky Mountains until it closed in 2003. In 1920-21 Portland annexed much of what is now easternside of downtown Portland including most of what is now Newberg; this annexation increased business activity for both cities however due to transportation concerns about integrating two different municipalities with different water resources). In 1961 saw passage of Measure O which funded construction of Interstate 5 through central Oregon creating an interchange just east of present day Newberg; this interchange has since been renamed CenturyLink Park after the company that sponsored its construction (Charter Communications) - one year before regional telecommunications giant AT&T acquired Charter Communications for $52 billion making it oneofthelargest mergers ever made by a single company at that time!
