In ensuing decades Newberg experienced rapid growth due to its location at the nexus of several wagon trails and trade routes connecting eastern Oregon with western Nevada, California (via Mexico), and both Canada and Europe. Somegrowth came at the expense of nearby towns such as Hood River which were swallowed up by new development; however overall growth remained slow relative to other contemporaneous American settlements throughout much of Oregon history
Newberg was founded in 1872 by John Newberg and his wife, Emma. The town was named after the nearby Mount Hood National Forest. In 1902, Newberg became part of the City of Portland.
