Springfield is named after General Joseph Hooker's headquarters during his march from Mexico to California in 1846.General Hooker's army halted near what is now Springfield after reaching Utah Territory on July 10th, 1847 and camped there until he left on July 25th for his return journey to Mexico City laden with supplies and troops. The first mention of Springfield was in an article entitled "The Salem Argus" which ran on November 20th, 1872: "On Tuesday last we passed through Junction City about 12 miles west of here on our way to Salem...We found several teams of horses grazing under some trees along the road." At that time there were no roads or railways in this part of Oregon so travelers had to rely upon horseback travel which was also dangerous because wild animals could maneuver around obstacles quickly. By 1880 when Springfield started being developed as a town it had only 4 homes and 46 businesses but by 1910 it had over 2,000 residents living in 126 homes including 15 schools and 11 churches. From 1890 until 1920 Springfield experienced rapid growth due to new housing development associated with World War I production plants; however by 1930 most industry had moved out or closed while jobs disappeared during the Great Depression which impacted overall population growth rates by 5%. However, since 2000s growth rates have been modest due to low unemployment rates combined with increasing commercial activity within walking distance of most residents making it easier for everyone to stay connected despite declines elsewhere in Oregon

Springfield, Oregon is a town in Klamath County, California, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in Springfield were farmers named Brown and Smith who arrived May 1857 from Illinois. A post office called "Oregon" was established in 1861, and by 1870 it had outgrown its original location on the east side of the Klamath River. A new post office called "Springfield" was opened on Valentine's Day 1872 by John C. Griggs with a population of just 10 residents. The name stuck and the town prospered until 1906 when it was merged with nearby Portland to form what is nowPortland–Vancouver–Hillsboro, OR-WA. In 1916 Springfield became an official city after approval by voters; however, it never gained any real municipal power until 1969 when it reincorporated as a town again under its present name. The history of Springfield can be traced back to 1850 when Joel Workman set up his farmstead near what is now downtown Springfield. Workman started out small but quickly grew into one of the most successful ranchers in central Oregon due to his close relationship with local Native Americans and his early invention of plows that helped make agriculture possible in this remote area. In 1856 he married Mary Jane Sommers and together they founded what would become known as the Workmans Mills millinery shop which operated for over 50 years before being destroyed in 1945 by fire amendment Number 3 (Public Law 89–573). In 1865 George Waddell settled down near present day Springdale Boulevard and began growing hay for local use; this led to him developing what would become known as Waddell Farms which included land that still stands today including parts of Enterprise Drive & Bruce Street - one of only two intact sections remaining from old Springfield! Waddell also built several residences including home #2 on North Lamar Street which still stands today! His agricultural success inspired other pioneers to settle around him such as Caleb Cook who started building homes along South College Avenue in 1896 while also founding The Oregonian Newspaper Company; David Kelley started raising cattle on land adjacent to Waddell’s farmstead beginning in 1898; Elisha Bird settled down near Sprague Avenue between Columbia Road & Walnut Street beginning around 1903; Jens Petersen began farming south of Sprague Avenue between Howe Road & Crystal Springs Road about 1915; Arno Schmidt developed an extensive fruit orchard west of Sprague Avenue about 1925; Clarence Dickey also began farming south of Sprague Avenue between Howe Road & Crystal Springs Road about 1915 although he did not achieve great success until later years And finally Harry Weisner developed a large dairy complex across Northeast Thurston Boulevard from Sprague Avenue north to SE Clinton Street starting about 1935 which continues to operate today as Wells Fargo Dairy LLC!
