The first European settlement in Oregon was at Fort Clatsop on 13 October 1846 by Captain George Vancouver and his crew of HMS Beagle. The men built their fort to protect themselves from Indian attacks. It was quickly abandoned, but it served as a warning to other groups who might be looking for new land in Oregon. In 1847, Englishman John Cunliffe founded another European settlement at Fort Halliday on an island in the Columbia River opposite today’s Portland. This site became known as Springfield because of its close proximity to rich copper mines and goldfields near modern day Portland. In addition, Fort Halliday served as a trading post between Portland and California during this time period. However, it wasn’t until 1853 that Springfield proper officially became a town when settlers decided to submit an application for incorporation with the help of local politicians. The incorporation process took several months due to many objections from nearby communities such as Hillsboro which felt that Springfield should only be allowed because it was adjacent to their city limits! When it finally happened, Springfield grew rapidly into one of Oregon’s most important towns! The early days of Springfield were very difficult due to its location right next door to two major mining operations! However, through hard work and determination, citizens managed to make their town successful nonetheless! Today, Springfield is home to a thriving community that continues its proud tradition of being one of Oregon’s most vibrant cities!
The first permanent European settlement in what is now Springfield, Oregon was made by the Spanish in 1817. The town was named San Francisco de la Rioja after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who led an army against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. As early as 1839, it was known as "Salinas." In 1861, the small community of Stroudsburg grew up around a post office and two stores near the banks of the Willamette River. When soldiers fired on a crowd of civilians at Stroudsburg on April 14, 1861, killing nine people and wounding twenty-one others, the community quickly came to terms with their role in history and renamed itself Springfield in honor of its military namesake.
