(later Starbucks) grew out of small farmers' markets throughout Oregon and Washington state. They began Selling Ground Coffee (SG). SG was originally blended with other methods like French roast or Arabica beans from Africa but later became its own individual flavor variety that could be ordered fresh or store-bought at their stores across the United States. For many years after SG became available for purchase at grocery stores throughout America, it remained one of the most popular direct-to-consumer products on the market. The late 1990s brought about changes for Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CB&T). CB&T transitioned from a manufacturing company into an online retailer in 2002 and soon after began selling whole bean roasted coffee through their website as well as through various third party merchants such as Amazon and Walmart. These new retail formats made it possible for CB&T to reach more consumers who were not able to locate them directly within their product range or through their larger flagship stores located near major metropolitan areas like New York City or Los Angeles. The first African American coffee farmer, Tom Peebles, was born in 1847 in a small town near Tuskegee, Alabama. After working as a farm hand and becoming a grocery storekeeper, Peebles bought his own land and started growing coffee. In the early 1960s, he partnered with an Italian-American entrepreneur named Angelo Rossi, who helped improve the quality of beans and introduce new roasting methods. In 1969, Peebles sold his company to Italy's Nestle SA for $1 million.
